Question:
would losing weight quickly affect menstral periods

I have always been right on cycle. I was on my period when I had surgery. I had it the next month like clock work. Now i am 20 days late, I am hoping it is due to the surgery. Has this happen to anybody?????    — Jane T. (posted on June 14, 2003)

Hi, I've always been irregular with mine but because of the blood thinner they had me on I had one during surgery as well then didn't have one for 2 months which is how long it's been since my surgery. I think with all the changes your body is going through right now it's probably not uncommon to be late or not have one at all.

Its a very good possibility its because of surgery. Losing weight very quickly does affect your period...thats why bulemics and people that are anorexic will stop having theirs. I'm sure it will regulate once your weight levels off a bit.But if your still worried never hurts to call. Congrats on your weight loss, hopefully ill be on the losing side soon...love

Hi...I'm 13 months post-op and haven't had a regular period in 13 months, so I know it's from my surgery. I get my period every 21 days on average (fun, with the extra PMS...not!).

I guess I'm just the opposite. I haven't had a period in so long - UNTIL surgery - woke up and started - I've been on and off ever since (last 4 weeks)... can't wait to go to the gyn and get my depo shot - - -

This is how it was explained to me by a gynocologist: When a woman is overweight, she is storing important female hormones in that fat...the more fat you are , the less of these hormones are circulating in the normal way. Anyhow, when you begin to lose weight quickly, these hormones start to release. That is why many women will get pregnant unexpectedly after WLS when they never were able to get pregnant before...so caution is definitely in order! Anyhow, when I lost my first 40 pounds or so, I began to get periods, even though I was on Depro and usually didn't get one at all...these periods were long and sometimes as soon as one ended, another came popping up..now I am more to once a quarter..which makes me much happier. Hope this explains things to you better.

I have always been irregular, especially now that I'm not on birth control. I'm 1 year post-op and my periods are wacky as ever. Sometimes get it once every 2 months, sometimes twice in one month, its frustrating. But now I cannot tell you the last time I had one- it's been atleast 3 months!! And I'm not pregnant. If there is any chance, take a test, otherwise you might want to see a GYN. I'm heading there myself to get back on track. Goodluck to you :-)
