Question:
I am almost seven weeks post-op from open rny and have developed kidney stones!! I

have never had problems of this sort before and wonder if it is diet related, as in so much protein, calcium, etc. in these past six weeks. All I know is it is extremely painful, and I spent about 5 hours in the emergency room the other day because of it. Now I have to follow up with a urologist, on top of everything else. I know it sounds like I am whining, and I guess I am, but I was just beginning to feel good after all the side effects of the rny, and now this. What gives??    — Julie G. (posted on June 11, 2003)

Kidney stones are very common after WLS. They are often the result of dehydration. Be certian that you are getting your 64 oz of water every day. This is really hard early post op and now that you are probably able to drink more, the problem should resolve itself. Follow up with the urologist, but don't stress about it too much. I had the exact same thing, but it was a short term problem.

I had kidney stones before and after surgery. My husband, who is and always has been thin, has also recently passed a stone. I do not think the stones are related to the surgery, because lately I have heard of several people I know who have passed stones. The only thing I do know is that yes...they hurt like hell! Hope you feel better!

I also had kidney Stones and was told it was due to not enough input of water in my diet. to all new post-ops out there it is extremely important to get your liquids in every day.

If you have a stone now at 7 weeks out it was not from your WLS. My husband has had many stones and in studying on stones when he started getting them we found it takes approximately 3 months to develope just one stone. So, I doubt if you can blame your surgery. You may or maynot have another stone just drink lots of water and never let your urine consentrate. This is when they start forming. Good Luck!
