Question:
I'm 30 days post op and having a lot of trouble sleeping

I am able to sleep on my side again with no problems and I fall asleep easily but wake up often. I DO NOT feel rested when I wake up. Any tips? Jamie    — Jamie M. (posted on May 23, 2003)

Jamie, are you still taking any pain relievers? Or maybe other meds? This can often give you interrupted sleep. You're still early post-op, so you may be uncomfortable in certain positions, etc. It may take some time to get used to. I had trouble at first as well, but it got better! Goodluck to you :-)

Been there, it's rough but it does go away on its own. See if your Dr. can help, I found being at this site and a good book kept me company till I could go to sleep at the wee hours...

Were you able to get back on your meds for depression? Those should help you attain a better nights sleep! Maybe too well if you're anything like I was :>) Are you still on pain meds for the open wound? Could be those are interrupting your sleep - or the wound itself may be pulling when you turn and is interrupting your sleep. Hope you find some rest soon though!

I was the same way. I couldn't figure it out at first, then I realized I had been having tea during the day. It didn't affect me pre-op like it does post. I've really cut back on caffeine and it has helped. I also cracked a window open just enough to allow some fresh air in. OMG, that helped the most! Good luck!

Are you still taking your pain medication? I had this same problem post op, and it went away immediately after I discontinued taking my pain meds.

Jamie - review your supplements. I was having some trouble staying asleep and when I reduced my B12 intake, my sleep improved dramatically. Your body is going through a lot of changes right now. Review your medications and doses, food, and supplements with your Doc and Nutritionist and perhaps you will find the culprit. Best of luck to you!
