Question:
Anyone been able to eat chinese foods--

My husbands favorite but I'm just not sure what actually in most of the dishes. Only two weeks out so this is just for future use.    — Tonya H. (posted on May 21, 2003)

I am seven months post op - and have eaten Chinese food - BUT - be careful of the rice - If I just stick to the main meat (chicken, etc.) and some of the mix, I am OK - but the rice bloats me and make me feel terrible. Best of luck.

I am 4 months post-op, and I have eaten Chinese with no ill effects. I've eaten sweet and sour chicken with rice, and some Schezuan chicken with rice. The rice fills me up very quickly, but so far has stayed down! (Eggs, on the other hand - not so pretty a story.)

Everyone is different. I am 17 months post-op and I have tried to eat chinese food 3 times during this period and have thrown it back up every time. Too bad, we love going to the chinese buffet.

I actually had Egg drop soup in my first week post op. It was like chicken broth with egg whites in it, very thick, low fat and nice for the clear liq stage. The first time I had Chinese food was at 8 mos out and I had diarrhea for 4 hours afterward. I can eat it now w/no probs.

Be very careful of Chinese food. I love it, too, but it is very misleading. While there are some healthy dishes, a lot of it is very loaded with sugar and calories. Everything I've ever read says that the dishes with a white sauce are the best (moo goo gai pan, chicken and snowpeas, etc.), but that the brown sauces and plum sauces are not good choices for us. I, too, enjoyed some egg drop soup when I was about 6 weeks out. I've since tried chicken and snow peas and just ate some of the chicken, which was quite tender and good. I do not eat rice. Good luck, believe me, I know how hard it is to not eat at the buffets. This was one of my favorite things pre-op. I really don't think about it or miss it much now. My husband gets take out and I don't have a problem with it.

I love chinese food and can still eat it without any problems. I usually have a barbeque spare rib and a tablespoon of chicken or pork fried rice and call it a day! If you are a dumper, be careful of the barbeque sauce or sweet and sour sauce or another personal favorite of mine, the sauce on the honey garlic chicken. Hidden sugars in everything...<br> Lap-RNY 1/13/03 -100 lbs & counting!

Six months out from my RNY and I've had Chinese food 3-4 times. I retain water like crazy the next day, no matter what restaurant the food comes from or what it is. I can eat a little beef and broccoli, and I have tried peanut chicken and some fried rice, crab rangoons, chow mei fun, etc. I had steamed rice once - seems like it sat in my pouch for a long time, but stayed down.

I had lots of trouble w/chinese til about 6 months out. Before that I had to stick with things like steamed fish, absolutely no rice or noodle dishes or anything fried or sauces. I still stick mostly to those guidelines. I prefer to still stay away from the rice & noodles because they fill me up so much. I can go to a buffet now and eat a nice small plate of food w/no problems. I usuall choose things like chicken mushroom, seafood delight, boiled shrimp. I could not keep down wonton soup til after the 6 months either. We love chinese too and we do eat it often.

I'm 4 months out and have had chinese food several times. I can eat just about anything as long as I don't eat too fast. My favorite is mooshu shrimp but I have to be careful of both the pancake (must chew chew chew) and the sugar in the hoisin sauce (use sparingly, but I LOVE hoisin sauce so that's hard). So if I'm famished, something like mooshu which demands the greatest of care while eating, is out of the question. Then I will go for some kind of seafood and veggies mixed with a little rice.

It was about 18 months after my RNY before I could eat Chinese food and keep it down. I have no idea why! For that period of time I learned (the hard way) to just order egg drop soup and have that while everyone else was chowing down. Now I do OK with it. I limit my choices to something simple like beef or chicken with snow peas. I eat very little rice with it as rice seems to gum up the works for me still. hugs, Ann rny 9/10/99 260/124

Tonya, I loved Thai food pre-op, tried to eat at post op, and I find it too too salty, with not being able to drink afterwards, it's puts a dampen on things, so I've nixed actually eating Thai food, Occasionaly I've gone to China Express (Little fast food place) and have eaten their Mandarin Chicken, Now-a-days I really count everything I eat (Calories and Fat content) so I only eat there on occasion. As it may no have any MSG, but I find most Chinese food is laden in Calories and allot of FAT ! If you're going to eat it, I would stick with stir fried meats with no sauce, and steamed veggies, I also don't do much rice..... It sticks when I order it from them, I do how-ever eat sushi, and love it.. Go figure... Hope this info helps....

I eat the Chicken Chow Mein and have no problems. BTC recomends this if your going to eat Chinese food. Good luck and enjoy!

I love almond chicken (I pick off most of the crusty shell)without gravy, chicken or pork chow mein, egg roll guts, shrimp fried rice (I usually steal a spoonful off hubby's plate), and I adore the bbq'ed pork!

I guess you will just have to see how you react to it. I can eat anything EXCEPT chinese/japanese types of foods. Egg rolls are fine but the only time I have barfed it was japanese noodles- and that was 11 months postop!. I'm not sure why..soy sauce? MSG? Stir fry was my fav pre-op, now I'm afraid to try it again...

I'm 18 months post-op (almost) and I eat Chinese a lot. The only thing I don't eat is the rice. I started with Hot & Sour soup when I was about two or three weeks out. I've had no problems with anything I've eaten in a Chinese restaurant.

I'm 4 1/2 mos. out and had a bad reaction to Chinese food last week. Not really dumping, although I did vomit. It was more like a reaction, possibly to MSG, although I've never had that before. Rash, spots, chills, nausea - not fun. I won't be trying it again for quite a while, and only then w/out MSG.

5 weeks out here and had shrimp fried rice yesterday. I had such a taste for it. Although it tasted just as good as ever, what a waste. I will not bother again. What's the point when I eat about 6 bites. I'm not a fan of many leftovers and the remainder of this meal would last a week or so (e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y). I'll wait another couple of weeks and go back to my favorite...pepper steak (no rice). But, I didn't have any problems with it. Good luck!
