Question:
Help! Does Everyone Have to have Bowel Prep?

I have been hearing from others that they have to bowel prep. I was never told about this but wondering if I should have. Does everyone have to have it done? Or only certain people? What is it for?    — AliciasMommy (posted on May 5, 2003)

I did. I wasn't that bad. The only word of advice be near a bathroom. I had to take phospo soda 24 hours before so plan to stay at home that day. Good Lux

The only pre-op instruction I had were to not eat or drink after midnight...my surgery was at 7:30 in the morning.

My surgeon does not require the bowl prep. If you've had a visit with the nutritionist and instructions were not given for you to do so, then it's probably not required. You can call your surgeons office to be sure.

I was not able to eat solid foods for 24 hours and I had to give myself a Docolax Suppository before bedtime.

Just do what your own surgeon says! You will likely find a variety of responses to this one. I did not have to do a bowel prep, only clear liquids (nothing red or pink) the day before and nothing after midnight the night before surgery.

It depends on the surgeon. My surgeon didn't require it. However I have had past surgeries where I had to do it and it wasn't so bad. Good Luck!! 11 weeks out, down 60+ lbs!! : )

My surgeon required Fleet Phospho Soda the night before. It was not a fun night. My biggest mistake was thinking I could get anything accomplished that evening -- not a chance. But then everyone is different. That was just my experience. Try not to worry too much about it. It is only a very small part of the puzzle. Good luck!

I only had to be on clear liquids 24 hours before surgery, and nothing to eat or drink after midnight before surgery....easy to do, really. I think I would hava hated a "bowel prep"...sounds so ominous!***Amy LAP RNY 04-09-03

I didn't have to have a bowel prep or a special diet the day before. My doctor said just eat light and nothing after midnight liquid or solid. I had no problems.

I didn't have to do anything except, stop eating after midnight. My last meal of prime rib and baked potato was at 11:00pm the night before surgery. The next day all They did was hook up the I.V.'s and wheel me into the O.R. I was required to pee and poop before I left the hospital. OPEN RNY 11-11-02 down 140pds
