Question:
How difficult is it to stay on a liquid diet for two weeks after surgery?
I was just wondering if others could tell me about how this went for them. I am still pre-op waiting for approval and wondered how difficult this is going to be. I have not really ever read anyone talk about it, so I thought I'd ask. — Michele B. (posted on April 29, 2003)

It's not too bad, the first week is usually clear liquids and the second
week you are on full liquids, the only thing that got me was the head
hunger. Everytime I saw a commercial I was "hungry" for
something, pizza, burgers, and I don't even eat red meat...Good Luck with
your surgery

Its not that hard to be on the liquid diet for 2 weeks.trust me you'll
worry more about it now then after the surgery. You won't even care about
what your drinking......lol..

I was on full liquids for the first two weeks and had no problems. The
liquids filled up my pouch and I had no physical hunger or appetite (what
others call head hunger)...JR

I'll be honest Michele, for me it was the toughest part about having the
surgery. I mean, I expected the pain. But the clear liquids was harder
for me personally. My surgeon was strict about liquids too but like you it
was only for 2 weeks. I caved on day 13. I didn't figure one day would
mean life or death. I was actually pretty proud of myself that I lasted
that long. But I was determined to follow the rules, I just had to bend
them a tiny bit. I couldn't believe that I actually looked forward to
pureed foods. But OMG! That first bite of mashed potatoes was pure heaven!
You'll do fine. I agree with previous posts. Be creative with your
liquids and you'll do fine. One thing that really helped me get through
that phase was SF popsicles and herbal tea. I hope that helps. Good luck
to you!

I was awful with my post-op diet...I got VERY lucky! I ate mushy corned
beef hash and eggs the second day I was out of the hospital. I had peanuts
chewed to mush on the way home. Do I recommend this? Nope! Please follow
your docs advice. I "mostly" did.

I was released from the hospital on pureed foods. Even that was rough at
the time. Notice I said rough...not impossible. It's only 2 weeks. I had
absolutely no hunger whatsoever, so my problem was trying to get something
to appeal to me. No matter what, please follow your dr's advice. I just
can't believe how different all the docs are.
You will do GREAT!

You will get through the liqid phase of your post op plan because YOU HAVE
TO. You must keep it in your head that you have to get through this or you
will have great difficulties with working your wls tool. Do exactly what
your surgeon says to do. My surgeon requires 6 weeks of clear fluids and 2
weeks of full fluids- 8 weeks altogether of liquids. This is hard but it
gives the insides a longer healing time and also gives a good start to
losing weight. I am preop but have done 8 weeks of liqids before when I had
jaw surgery. It wasn't that bad. I survived :)
