You sound lucky to me. I have to drink nothing but clear liquids for 2
days preop and then nothing after midnight the night before and my surger
is at noon. Good luck!!

I was told clear liquids the day before and nothing by mouth after
midnight. I had my surgery in the afternoon too and was so dehydrated they
couldn't get a vein for the IV. They had to pull in an expert at IV's.
Try to drink as much liquid as you can the day before. Also it helps to
get the vein if you are warmed up by warm blankets. On the day before
surgery, you will be ready for "nothing by mouth" and so ready
for the surgery. After all, most of us have several "last
suppers" until this day. And a lot of us have to drink the phososoda
or whatever if your surgeon requires it. If this is required by your
doctor, you wouldn't want to be eating while this process is going on,
right? Good luck!

Hi Nicole! I was advised by my doctor to have a big breakfast the day
before surgery and after 12 noon I could only have slear liquids until 12
midnight. Then nothing else at all unless I had medicine to take the
morning of surgery and even then I could only sip water. That will just be
torcher if you can not have anything to eat at all. I would definitely
check on that. Goood Luck and GOD BLESS.

you do sound lucky. I am in the same boat as the last poster, clear liquids
for the 2 days before, and nothing by mouth after the midnight before.

I did not have to do anything like that. My only instructions were nothing
after midnight the night before surgery. Sounds like I was very lucky!

I was also on a 2-day pre-op clear liquid diet with nothing by mouth after
midnight on the day of the operation...JR

The protocol at my weight management clinic is a low calorie liquid diet
for at least TWO WEEKS prior to surgery. Many of the patients do the
liquids for three weeks. I followed the liquid diet pretty good - though I
would sneak a teaspoon or two of peanut butter in most evenings. ;)

Ditto the last poster, except where I go, we're supposed to be on the
optifast for 6 weeks prior!

It is truely amazing the difference in doctors and hospitals, i ate at
fudruckers 9 hours before surgery, surgery was at 6:00am, in the hospital
for 3 days and they made me eat pureed food before i left to see if i would
lose it or not. It stayed down, and have eaten whatever i wanted ever
since. Down 75 pounds since 12-5-02, open rny.

Im looked into this since my doc requires 2 days f cklear liquids with
fleet phospho and antibiotics.:( Fotr LAP surgeons being completely cleaned
out gives them a bit more room making surgery somewwhat easier. The
ntibiotics Flagyl try to knock out the bad bugs in the gut that cause soime
nausea after surgery. Theres as many answers to this as there are surgeons.

I was told not to eat the day before my 8 a.m. surgery, no reason either, I
wish I had eaten breakfast that morning on the day before surgery. We had
to travel three hours to the hospital on the day before my surgery, so my
husband wouldn't eat either, while I was being prepped he had to be put on
a bed too, his blood sugar dropped and he almost passed out. A glass of OJ
and he was fine. I think it is more for the surgeons benefit than the
patients, to make sure you are "cleaned out". Believe me the
stuff you have to take will do the job.

My only instructions were nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night
before. In fact, I had my "last meal" at Outback the night before
surgery. I did have to drink the stuff that cleans you out the night before
though.

I was on a clear liquid diet 2 whole days before surgery and I had to stop
taking everything 12 hours before surgery... nothing.. so you are doing
better than I had to do!
