Question:
Post ops looking sick?
I have seen a good friend have this surgery. I am pre-op myself. I never had the heart to tell her (and she already knew) that for a wile she looked very sick. Anyone else feel that way? Was it just the way her body responded? (By the way she ahs nearly met her goal and looks great now) Just trying warn my husband what to expect. — candylnd24 (posted on April 16, 2003)

I don't know if anyone else thought so, but I thought I looked very sickly
for about a month. Even when I had makeup on and was dressed up. I think
I look just as healthy as I did before surgery now.

I would say its the shock your body goes thru and the weight coming off as
it does (quick) that it could cause one to be sickly looking for a bit. But
once that wears off LOOK OUT! Jamie

I work at a Bariatric Hospital and I can't believe you posted this
comment!! I see people all the time who are pre and post op. I have seen
people from one week post op to one year post op and have gotten to know
them well. However, 90% of them have this "haze" look to them.
Like the sick look you were talking about and on some of them, it has not
gone away. I guess that is why it is important to take vitamins.

Went to my support group last night and while there, I looked at people
after seeing your ? yesterday. Nearly to the person, they all looked
sickly. Kind of pasty. and the ones that had make-up on looked harsh with
paint on over their white skin. And they ALL complain of being tired all
the time. I guess I look like that also. At least I think I do.

When we are overwieght we always look flushed...or at least I did. I was
always trying to get more air. I am a pale person anyway and now that I do
not have that 300lb flush on my cheeks, People say I look pale too. At one
time I was overly pale and after starting B12 shots it became better.

Hi,
After my surgery, until about 3 mos out, I looked pale and my skin wasn't
very good. I believe this is due to the fact that during the initial post
op period, we are ridding our bodies of many impurities stored in our fat.
And drinking more water and exercising and taking the right vitamins helps
speed the process of getting rid of those impurities. By the time I was 4
mos post op, with makeup on, I was told that my skin was "great"
and "luminous"! I still have circles, but I have always had
circles. Light coverup takes care of it. When I stop drinking my water the
way I should or miss my vitamins, my skin looks less
"great"...but when I stick to my regimen, it looks wonderful.
It's never been better. So, talk to your dr about your vitamins and levels,
and you might visit a dermatologist if warranted, and also visit a makeup
counter at a dept store for a free makeover session. Listen to their tips,
even if you don't buy anything. They have lots of good info for you. Then
you can go to a Walmart or other discount store and pick up less expensive
items. The big name makeup people own several of the companies that are
sold in these chain stores...Good luck!

I was *accused* of looking sickly or malnourished for a while after my
weight loss. I think part of the problem is we lose weight so quickly, and
people are used to seeing us heavy *fluffy*, that their brain doesn't catch
up with our bodies and they think we look sickly...we've been MO for a long
time and people tend to associate rapid weight loss with being sick. Also,
our bodies go through a very traumatic time when we are in our window of
opportunity...we lose weight quickly...we're not taking in as much
calories, etc., and our skin changes...also our weight shifts and we lose
in different areas at different rates. I still had an apron so my belly
still looked fluffy, but my face looked kind of gaunt in comparison. Then
after the TT, my belly looked in proportion to the rest of me, so my face
didn't look as gaunt. Just my 2 cents...take it for what it's worth.
Have a Sparkling Day!!

I still have people tell me I look gaunt and not to lose any more weight
and I'm 20 months post-op. I'm barely in the normal BMI range, so am NOT
too thin, and my thighs certainly don't look gaunt :) I've heard longer
term post-ops say that your skin plumps out again after a couple of years.
I could sure use some plumping!

I looked sickly after my surgery. I was super pale with dark circles under
my eyes. People commented on that a lot to me, but it was really only for
the first month. Now they all say "dang you look good" heehee
