Question:
Do I have to get my PCP involved to get tested for Sleep Apnea?
Do I just call a specialist and make an appointment or do I need my PCP to send me to one? I have Cigna POS and do they pay for the test or do I have to? — sherri M. (posted on April 10, 2003)

It probably depends on the insurance. I'm not sure about Cigna but I had
BCBS of Michigan and all I had to do was just call a specialist and make an
appt. I would call Cigna and find out if they cover it and also, which
specialist they cover it through and if you have to get a referral through
your PCP or not. Good Luck

It really isn't so much which insurance company as which kind of plan you
have. For most HMOs, you have to have a referral to see a specialist. For
PPOs, you don't. If you have had to get a referral to see anyone other
than your PCP, then you'll probably need one to get the sleep study done.
I think most insurance will pay for the sleep study iteself, since sleep
apnea can be life-threatening.
