Question:
I hear there is a new doctor doing laparascopic RNY in the New Haven CT. Area

Does anyone know who he is and how to reach his office? I understand he is new to the area but has lots of experience in this type of surgery. Thanks!!!    — Mary K. (posted on April 5, 2003)

I'm not sure about New Haven, but Dr. Zuccala does Lap RNY's in Danbury, and is fairly new to the area (about 2 years now). He's doing mine on May 5th.

My understanding is that Dr. Valin is no longer going to be doing Lap surgery. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure I got that info from a reliable source. I live in New Haven and after much research chose to travel down to Norwalk to see Dr. Crum. He was awesome and has a remarkable after care program. My lap surgery took 1 hour and 10 minutes. He has done many many other lap surgeries and started doing lap RNY about 3 years ago. I would definitely talk to people about their surgeons as well as listening to what the docor has to say about him or herself. I have heard a couple of bad stories about surgeons reputations that were not all they said they were. If it is a new surgeon in New Haven he is probably at Yale. They are starting a new bariatric program. Also the hospital you choose can be as important as the surgeon. If they don't have the best equipment to deal with the MO it can be dangerous. Good Luck!!!

A friend has an appointment with Dr. Valin at the end of April. So I think he is still doing the surgery. I have an appointment with Dr. Reinhold on Tuesday, I will ask him if he has any idea. I do know that Yale New Haven Hospital has doctors that also do the proceedure.

There is a new surgeon that practices out of Yale New Haven Hospital. His name is Dr. Robert Bell and his office is on Temple St. in New Haven CT. He does the LAP surgery and he has many many patients. Check him out because I here that he is a very good doctor. I have Dr. Reinhold as my surgeon. He is sooo great. I would recommend him to anyone.

Just to verify, I emailed Dr. Valin and the rumor of him NOT doing lap surgery anymore is NOT TRUE!! In fact, he is performing more lap rny and lap bands than open surgeries right now and has no plans to stop doing so. He was among the first to be trained in doing lap band...and Dr. Reinhold, the other surgeon who does rny at St. Raphael's in New Haven does not do lap at all, he is just about the only show in town, so to speak, unless there is another surgeon doing it at Yale. But again, to verify, straight from Dr. Valin, he is NOT stopping lap surgeries. ~CAE~

Hi mary, I'm a patient of Dr.Reinhold in new haven connecticut and my doctor suggested the lap on me however he does not do them, he said Dr. Barajas is taking on new patients for the lap procedure, she has been working with the group and now is on her own. Check her out, I went to wls seminar back in February and she was doing the question and answering segment of the meeting. Go to the "find a surgeon" section on here, and her name was just recently added, I believe her number is given there as well. As for me I love Dr. Reinhold and i'm going to go with open, he has done over 1000 bypasses. Good luck to you!

I just saw Dr. Valin last week for my 6 month check up. His business is going full tilt. He is an awesone doctor and even better surgeon. If you have any questions about his practice it would be best to call his office directly. I have 3 friends who have had their surgeries in Danbury with Dr. Zucalla and have been very happy. He will always start Lap and if need be go to open. Dr Valin will schedule you for one or the other, and only if necessary will he open you if you are scheduled for lap. He also has a partner, so to say, in his office, Dr. Reinhart, I think. Good luck to you! Christine 6.5 months PO 318/228/160 down 90! 68 pounds to goal

Dr. Floch in Norwalk is pretty new to GBS but has been doing lap surgeries for years! His father is also a well known GI doc. I would be very careful of Dr. Zuccala in Danbury. I went to him initially and was very disappointed in his program. Also he didn't catch 2 issues that Dr. Floch did (a hernia and a postive h pylori test - both of which Dr. Floch has and will address.) I can reccomend Dr. Floch to anyone!!!!!! Good luck! Best,
