Question:
Are you like me?
I found out today that I will have my surgery on Friday the 14th..only four more days to go!!! I know this gets asked alot..and my question is two or three fold. First..is there anyone pre-op like myself who is 5'10", 305 lbs? having surgery on or near the 14th. Second..Does anyone have advice for going in the hospital? What to take, experiences-good or bad, Third..Ive been to my nutrition class and I feel about 90% prepared, but I feel like I only have half the picture. And advice on being a "newbie?" Thanks for any and all suggestions, comments, advice, warnings, etc.... — Jaime H. (posted on March 10, 2003)

Jaime, congrats on your upcoming surgery. I don't have your same stats, but
thought I would answer your post. It's great to be well-prepared, but even
the best have surprises and new things they learn along the way, it's all
part of the experience! Most hospitals will give you a sedative during the
wait for surgery so you aren't as nervous/scared. You'll be in and out
before you know it! One thing I was glad to have in the hospital was my own
comfy slippers. They really emphasized walking, and having my own slippers
made me feel more at home. Ask if you can be roommates with another WLS
patient, I don't know if its possible, but mine happened to have the same
surgery next to me, and we supported eachother the whole time, it was
really great! As for when you get home, you're going to try and eat alot
of protein, b/c as we all know we need alot, but don't fear in the
beginning, we can't get alot. My surgeon said to concentrate on liquids for
the first few weeks and get whatever protein in I could. It was usually
30grams the most in the beginning- i know that was something I worried
about, but it's fine. And make sure you get in your water! it is so
important to help us stay hydrated. Goodluck to you, wishing you the best!

Believe it or not - there is a wealth of information in the Library here -
just look up any question. My surgery is 3/26 - and I've learned to pack
chapstick for dry lips since you won't get anything to drink for maybe 48
hours, tongs to help you wipe yourself because it'll be hard to bend, a
pair of slippers, a robe, reading material, loose clothes to wear home and
anything personal you'll need. I am taking some phone numbers, some
make-up, a brush and underwear of course. Usually we take too much. Good
Luck and use that Library page. Sally, Harrison, MI

Hi... My surgery is Wednesday, the 12th. I am 5'9" 315. Close to your
stats. All I can say is that I started going to support groups 6 months ago
so that I was prepared with as much information as possible. I recently
purchase two books from barnes and noble with doctors and nurses'
perspectives on the surgery. Basically, I am going with liv-lite and I
won't learn any additonal information until before and after the surgery
while in the hospital. Wishing you the best... keisha

Jaime,
We have almost the same stats, how-ever I'm post op 9 1/2 months and am
down 126 pounds,
Height of 5"10 and starting weight of 303 pounds,
I'm holding right now at 177 pounds.
All the other posts, posted some good information, another thing you might
want to take with you would be 1.) a fan for the room, and 2.) a heating
pad.
I know I had an epidurl (spelling) and the heating pad made my back feel oh
so much better. Just thought I would post,
If I can help you at any time email me.
Best of luck to you, God Bless.
