Question:
I'm four months post op and a little concerned with my calorie intake. I'm 5'7 inche
230 lbs. I presently consume 1200 calories a day which I think is way too much. Should I be at 600-800 ? anyone experience the same. I try and stay away from carbs and take in mostly protein. what are your thoughts. — lisa G. (posted on March 10, 2003)

I don't know what your start out weight was but I am 4months and 4 days
out. I started at 255 and now 184. I only eat 1 to 1 1/2 oz per meal,
3xdaily. I eat mainly lean meat and green veggies. I am not sure how many
calories that is.

At 4 months post-op, I was probably eat 400-600 calories a day, which was
probably too few. My nutritionist wanted me at 600-800. At 6 months, I
probably wasn't doing much more than at 4 months and my nutritionist wanted
me at 1000 calories. I haven't gotten there yet, but am at 600-900. If
you can kick it back to 1000, I think you'll be in better shape, but if
your exercise/activity level is high enough, you could be fine at 1200...JR

I, too, am 4 months post-op. I am 5'10. started at 290 and am down 70 lbs.
I average around 800-900 calories per day now. I continue to limit my carbs
and sugar (but I do have some!) I average around 75-80 gr. of protein each
day. I feel great, have not lost 1 strand of hair (knock on wood), and
haven't yet hit a plateau. So I guess it is working for me. Are your
current eating habits working for you? If so, then I wouldn't worry too
much about your overall caloric intake, so long as your doing protein first
and continuing to lose weight. If you do hit a plateau or the weight loss
really slows down, then adjust as necessary. Good luck! :)

Lisa, I am at 1200 per day now and I am 7 mos out. I haven't seen my
Nutrionist since 1-15, but, at that point, I was 5 mos out and was told to
be around 1000cal/day, so, I think you maybe a little high. However, if
you are doing alot of exercise and still losing, then don't worry about it.
You aren't absorbing that much anyway!

How are you losing? If you're doing well, then keep doing what you're
doing. Going too low on calories can cause a plateau as your body thinks
it's starving.

kuwait so i dont cook muc, or i still have soup lunch varies alot, i still
have some problems with meat especially poultry. i have lost 75 pounds and
am 4 months 2 days post op. i am still eating alot of the soft foods cause
i have pain alot so i am careful.i started at 275 am 5'3" and today i

Lisa,
I just got off the phone with my surgeon's office, I am 5 months out, and
was wondering how many colories to comsume in a day. They said I should
have between 800 and 1000. I thought that was low, but seeing some of the
answers here, I guess not. I bought this nutrition calculator from QVC that
has helped me out a lot. I keep track of everything with it. It's called
Nutricounter, I found it on QVC.com in the health or exercise equipment
section its somewhere in the 30 dollar range. It makes counting calories,
and protein, etc. easy. I noticed that I was consuming way too many
colories a day. What I thought was "free" was actually 60
calories a serving, and I was having 3 servings in my coffee every morning!
Good luck!
Christine
