Question:
Has anyone by passed these drinks & went on to soft foods?
Help.... I am 10 days post-op with having the Lap/RNY. Everything has gone very well so far, no prolems what so ever (thank god) The problem I'm having is I have tried several protein supplements such as Med-Rx, Iso-Pure, etc.. I can't hack any of them..I gag everytime I try to drink one. I started to eat scrambled eggs and soups just to at least get some protein in, and everything has gone down without any problems. My question, is this ok to by pass the drinks and continue on with what I'm doing?? Has anyone else by passed the supplement drinks? I'd apprecite any feed back that would at least ease my mind, or give me some suggestions..Thanks in advance. — Kathie W. (posted on March 6, 2003)

I'm 3 months post op, and I just recently found a protein I can sometimes
tolerate. It's called MGF-2, and I can chug it down pretty fast without
agonizing over it, like other ones I've tried. I mostly try to get in as
much protein rich food as I can. I would suggest you keep trying to find
one that works for you, but don't rush yourself. Your tastes really DO
change!! :)

I couldnt handle the liquids proteins either, but I was on a liquid diet
for 10 days, then pureed for the next 3 weeks. When I was early on - I ate
a lot of yogurt. Now I am 3 1/2 months out and eat zone bars for extra
protien. I'll add that I have lost 70 lbs thus far. Good Luck and I hope
you find something that works for you!

My surgeon had me eating an ounce of oatmeal for breakfast before I ever
left the hospital. I don't think not being on liquids for many days harmed
me, or my wieght loss - I have lost 104 pounds in eight months. Lori RNY

I found it too hard to try to get 60 gm of protein daily from food. I kept
a food journal and I just wasn't eating enough. I now drink 2 protein
drinks a day (order some samples from vitalady.com) and I never worry about
my food. I eat mostly vegies and some meat and a little fruit once in a
while. I'm 5 months out and down 78 lbs.

I'm still pre-op - but as I was getting the things together that I will
need postop I ran into a SOY protein. It's canned and powdered - but it
says a serving (2 scoops) has 25 grams of protein. It says to mix with
milk - so that would add more protein. Has anyone tried this? Thought I
might try it during the week pre-op so I have lots of protein in me. Gotta
ward off that HAIR LOSS!!

I am 2 1/2 weeks post op from a Lap RNY. I went home from the hospital
eating a soft/pureed diet. Both the Dr. and nutritionist said very
clearly that at this point I was not eating enough food to take in the
necessary protein daily without drinking at least 1 shake. Try the Atkins
Chocolate Royale. The chocolates are the only ones from AAtkind that I
liked. It's not too bad, although I am beginning to get a little bored. I
picked up an Isopure Alpine Punch drink today, and will give it a try
tomorrow. My sister, is 7 months post op Lap RNY, and now gets enough
protein w/o the shakes, so I guess this won't be forever. Good luck!!

You might want to order some samples from Vitalady. Each sample is one
serving and costs $1.99 (I think). Trying them pre-op really doesn't help
much because your tastes may change and what you liked pre-op will not
taste good to you post op. Also, what I love, you may hate. Having said
that, I'll also say that the dietician that several Denver area doctors use
is very emphatic in saying that we should NEVER take any protein drinks.
Her view is that calorie containing beverages are not advisable, no matter
what they are. In your first couple of weeks, the MOST important thing is
staying hydrated. Very few people can get in a full 60 grams of protein
that early. <p>I also want to say something about protein and hair
loss. I have seen so many posts from people who say they got lots of
protein, took zinc, used Biotin and/or Nioxin and still losts lots of hair
that I really don't think there is anything that is guaranteed to prevent
it or stop it. It seems to be pretty random, since I've also seen posts
from people who didn't do any of those things (except maybe the protein)
and didn't lose any hair.

You could get the UNFLAVORED protein powder and mix it into your liquids,
soups, puddings ect. Later on you could mix it into stews, mashed anything,
scrambled eggs....Watch getting it too hot or too cold, it apparently loses
its integrity. I would ask the surgeon before starting solids.
