There's a group on yahoo, I believe they call themselves the
"bandsters" where you could get good info. The US FDA study
found a 30% success rate with the band, although the rate appears to be
higher in European studies. A very well-known local bariatric surgeon
here in Pittsburgh was part of the FDA study and discontinued offering the
band after the trial as he felt the success rates were poor.

You can also go to www.spotlighthealth.com, click on morbid obesity and
support groups. There is a group for lap banders. But keep in mind that
if you go to these sites, they will probably be very "pro" lap
band!

To put my studies in....make sure the Dr you choose has been trained by
Australian Dr's...The studies out there are for the american version of the
band placement and fills. The Australian's have been sucessful for many
years and have different ways. The preferred method in Australia is the
lapband. As previously stated the bandsters are pro-band but you can get
well educated as well as just search for lap-band and you can find many
sites. Most insurance companies do exclude lap-band. Good Luck!! Only you
will know what is best for you.

As Cindy says, the lap band groups are "pro lap band." Makes
sense to me. However, this place has been extremely anti-lap band in the
year I've been coming here. Do lots of research and get perspectives from
ALL sides. I have LOTS of links about the lap band on my website. Click
on my name (in blue) after this post and you will see the address on my
profile. I'm extremely happy with my decision to have the lap band. I've
lost 56% of my excess weight already and it's only been 6 and a half
months.
