Question:
Anyone have problems with gold jewelery?
For the last 2 months all my gold jewelery has been leaving a ring around wherever I'm wearing it, this is jewelery I have had for years and never experienced this before, could it be a vitamin defiency? I'm 6 months post-op, by the way. — leeann N. (posted on February 12, 2003)

I too experienced some discoloration around my neck from my gold
chain...turned me a black-grey color...I took my chain off for a few days
and soaked it in some jewelry cleaner...now I am fine...good luck!! Have a
Sparkling Day!! ~CAE~

I asked a question like this about 3 yrs ago when I was a new post op. I
was nearly laughed off the website! But let me tell you this , when my Iron
is low this discoloration occurs. Many times it was right before my
periods. Scoff , if you must!! I believe there is a connection to the iron
thing.

I had a jeweler tell me just last week that this discoloration was due to
low iron. I have noticed myself that it is worse when I consume more than
normal acid (ie too much pepsi). My jewelry has always turned colors on me
and for Christmas, I asked for "a watch that doesn't turn my wrist
black". My DH got me a beautiful 14K gold (not plated) watch for
Christmas and guess what??? I noticed this afternoon that my wrist was
slightly discolored. I'll never tell him though :)
Anyways, you might want to check with your doc and up your iron.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I am also three months out and this has happened whenever I
wear gold...my wedding band, bracelets, earrings, etc. It never happened
to me prior to the operation and my husband kept telling me my jewelry was
probably dirty. I even had my rings and earring professionally cleaned and
it still happened. I'm so happy you asked this question!
I have been having blood work done and my iron has been within normal
ranges. The only thing out of whack on me is my potassium (it's low...I've
been vomiting a lot over the past few months...that's another story), my
A/G ratio (protein) is a little low, and my sodium has been a little
screwy. But nothing is too far off even if it is below the normal range.
What meds are you on? I'm on Actigall (which I've heard can possibly cause
this weird reaction), Prevacid, Reglan, Potassium, and the usual host of
vitamins and supplements.

Well it's great to know we aren't all just crazy because this has
definately been happening to me too! I will have my iron levels checked
this week, but I have definately been eating more acidy foods lately, so
maybe that will explain it!
