Question:
Everyone I ask, doesn't know. . .but I know someone out there does have the answer.

Hi, This is just what I think...it is not a scientifically based answer.. We go into ketosis we when don't eat carbs..or a very small amount of carbs. Therefore, I think that we go into or out of ketosis based on what we choose to eat. I think the Dr. ATkins website probably explains ketosis. His theory is to stay in ketosis to lose weight. Again, my thoughts only. Maureen

I know I have been in Ketosis in some form since my surgery on Nov 5, 2002. I range from pink to dark puple on the KetoStixs. It just depends on how much carbs I eat.**kelly

Ketosis= a condition producing ketones. Ketones are a product of fat metabolism. Fat metabolism begins when the body no longer has a reserve of sugar stored in the liver and muscle and then has to burn fat to produce energy. So...when you eat carbs, it temporarily can slow fat metabolism, thus differing color on ketone strips as previously posted. With many bypass patients, eating a high protien diet, besides being benificial for healing and keeping insulin levels steady, can increase fat metabolism. When you eat protien, it is not digested the same way as carbs, it takes longer and uses different enzymes, after all that digestion, it is faster for the body to burn fat, so it does. The body and organs have prefered sources of energy, organs vary on what they prefer, generally it will use carbs/sugars first, fat metabolism/ketones second, protien third--if I remember correctly. So after all that....you are in ketosis as long as you are burning fat, ie., losing wt....sorry so long.
