Question:
Which kind of protein is best for post ops?

I have seen so many different kinds. I want to try some before surgery and went to GNC but there are a lot of different kinds.    — Lynn S. (posted on February 3, 2003)

Lynn, go to www.vitalady.com and order samples. Just remember, your tastes will probably change after surgery, but you may be able to narrow down the field a bit. Good luck.

My nutritionist says that Real Meals is the most complete that she has seen. It also has the most amount of protein per ounce so you don't have to drink as much. Go to www.protein-solution.com they have a recipe page there too that has some really good recipes. I love the cookies and cream.

I tried Real Meals and didn't like the taste or texture (too gritty), and I don't like fruit flavored drinks. I tried and liked Myoplex low carb chocolate and Atkins Advantage chocolate royale, both of which are ready to drink. I bought them at GNC You can buy one can at a time to try them. Atkins is a little higher in fat, but my nutritionist said it was ok. I do agree with the point that you can get more protein per ounce with Real Meals, but I just couldn't swallow it.

Just a clarification -- the general consensus seems to be that the most protein we can absorb from a protein shake, per serving, is 30 grams. Anything more than that in a single serving will just "wash away." So we want to allow at least a couple of hours between shakes, and not go nuts trying to find anything with a higher protein content than that per serving.<P>Having said that, there are plenty of shakes on the market that you can mix up with as little as six or eight ounces of water and get your 30 grams of protein in, IF you look for them. I agree with the previous poster, go to www.vitalady.com and order up some of their individual servings of protein shakes, from all different manufacturers, in several different flavors. When you find one you like, you can either order it from there or see if somebody else carries it. I use Proscore 100 Chocolate (30 grams of protein, 4 grams of carbs, 0 sugar, 0 fat, per serving), which I get from vitalady. I also use ProBlend 55 Swiss Chocolate (also 30 grams of protein, don't recall what the other vitals are 'cause I'm on a Proscore kick right now), which you can get from GNC. Just don't commit yourself to buying a big tub or case of anything before you've sampled, because you might not like the taste and then you're stuck with it, or at least stuck with the hassle of returning it.

I have questioned my doctor and nutritionist about this. The 100% whey with whey peptides is absorbed the best. There are some products with the 100% whey without peptides that will not be absorbed 100%. I take half a Real Meals for breakfast and half in the afternoon, it fills me up and keeps me from going to the snack machine. I like that it also has a lot of other vitamins in it as well not just the protein. I like the taste of the chocolate. I have seen some other shakes available other than Real Meals that also have the whey protein and whey peptides in it at GNC. Everyone has different tastes some will love it and some won't that is with anything in the world. There is way too much back and forth on taste on this site. I use to take insulin shots everyday. It wasn't because I liked it, I had to do it. If your kid is sick you make the take whatever works best on them not what they like the best. Anyone is going to get bored at taking protein shakes for life or anything that you have to do on a daily basis.
