Question:
WHAT CAN I TAKE FOR MY HAIR LOSS?

HELP, MY HAIR IS SO THIN ON TOP I LOOK LIKE A SCARECROW, CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT I CAN BUY TO TAKE OR WHAT I CAN PUT ON IT.    — Gale G. (posted on January 27, 2003)

Gale, I'm not sure there's anything any one can do that will guarantee no hair loss. I know I've seen posts from people that did all the 'right' things, lots of protein, zinc, Biotin, Nioxin, etc., and still lost lots of hair. I've also seen posts from people who didn't do any of those things and didn't lose hair. However, if yours has already started coming out, I doubt that you can do anything to stop it. I lost a LOT of hair at 4 months out. At about 6 months out I went and got it cut really, really short. At that time my hairdresser said she could already see the new growth coming in. The hair loss will stop and your hair will come back in. Just give it a little time.

I agree with Gar. When my hair loss commenced at about 3 months out or so, I threw a dirty look at my big jar of protein powder (60 grams of which I'd religiously consumed, daily, since the surgery), and went out and bought some biotin. But before I got around to actually *taking* it, I noticed my hair loss was already abating. It stopped on its own about 4 weeks or so after it started. That made me believe that, so long as your hairloss isn't from a protein deficiency, it'll probably stop on its own. But YMMV (your mileage may vary). And lots of folks DO swear by certain supplements and hair care products, so watch this space -- I'm sure you'll get suggestions!

I'm sorry you're going through this as well. Unfortunately, many of us do, no matter how much protein we get. I started losing my hair at 6 months and am now 8 months and it is finally calming down ALOT! I used to get about 60 grams of protein, now I make sure I get 70grams. I had extremely thick hair, too, but I must have lost atleast 1/2 of my hair, some people it's more dramatic I think. I also recently got my haircut and they could see new growth. I never tried any of the products b/c I heard it may not work. Try upping your protein, as hard as it can be sometimes, but I found that definately has helped me. And be reassured that it will grow back! Goodluck!

I,too, agree with Gar that there is nothing you can do to stop the loss. It just has to run its course, and trust me, it will. And, while the hair is thinning, you won't go bald! When I was in the throes of hair loss, went to my hairdresser and asked for help! She gave me a cute new style, and even tho I wasn't crazy about it, liking longer hair, I got so many compliments that now I keep the hair short.

Gale, I have read that if you take Biotin, I take 600 mcg a day plus I read just today on this site, I clicked nutrition and was reading about Biotin. And this lady who was telling her story said that her hair stopped after three days of taking it. I was view before and after, then I clicked nutrition and read about it. Biotin is in alot of real expensive shampoo's too. You can get Biotin at GNC that is where I get mine. Good luck. Darlynn Casper

I have a suggestion that I haven't heard anywhere on here. Remember in "the olden days" when women used to brush their hair 100 times everyday? Well, I have long hair and I started doing this about 2-3 months ago. I don't remember to do it absolutely every day, and sometimes it's only 50 or 60 times, but I'm trying. I have a good hard-bristle brush and I really "go at it". Now, you might think, "All the hair that I now have is going to be gone if I do that.", but I believe that if you really are faithful and do this - even if your hair is only 1" long, you'll see a difference after a time. I noticed when I first started doing this that after a few weeks there were many "baby hairs". Hello? They gotta come in somehow, and yes, they'll be new hairs for a while and then one day you'll look in the mirror and notice that your hair is thicker. You might even try periodic photographs if you have like a digital camera. Try it and see!!
