Question:
Is there any one post op from RNY that is using the depo shot for birth control...

and had any sort of weight gain or problems. I am on it now...but Im only 2 months post op and Ive had my second injection 2 weeks ago..my first was pre-op...Just wondering if anyone had problems with taht shot post op?    — sandrac131 (posted on January 24, 2003)

I did it for a year and it was wonderful, no periods all year! But I decided it was killing my sex drive, so I changed back to the pill.

Hi there, Sandra! I've been taking the injections for a while now and have had no problems at all. The only complaint is that it's an injection, I hate shots! Vi open RNY 9/23/02 down 93 lbs

I actually started on Depo before my surgery because I hadn't had a period for 4 months and hated thinking I might be pregnant every month. I bled for my first 6 months almost straight. It was never hard, just enough to need a pad all the time. Now, I am 5 1/2 months post-op and down 85 lbs. Did the depo slow my weight loss? I don't know, but I really don't think 85 lbs is all that slow. Whenever I see my surgeon, he tells me I am ahead of schedule. I do have horrible hair loss that I am on the verge of seeing if there is something more I can do. I can say, like the other poster it has lowered my sex drive and as I get smaller I feel sexier and the sex is better so I am getting off the shot as soon as my husband is cleared from his viscectomy. I'd like to have my sex drive match my other feelings. Lots of luck in your endover.

i've been on the depo for a long time. i asked my ob/gyn about the depo and wls, and she said she doesn't see any problems but we should take calcium pills (which i don't). i asked my wls dr and he wasn't concerned about me getting the shot with surgery either. i've lost 117 pounds in 8 1/2 months, so i think it's ok.

I am still pre-op so I am not sure if the shot will slow the weight loss, but I do know for the year I was on the depo shot I gained about 80 pounds and have never been able to lose any significant amount of weight while I was on it. I also know that with the shot most women do not have a monthly period, but spotting is very common. I also recall that once I stopped getting the shot it still took over six months before I had a period again. Although I like the convenience of only worrying about birth control four times a year I will not risk any amount of weight loss for it.
