What is being done to eliminate death after surgery due to pulmonary Embolisms?

I believe the docs take every precaution to prevent this. My doc gives
heparin (blood thinner) before surgery and right up until we leave the
hospital at 6 days post op (Open RNY). Also coughing to clear the lungs
and the use of hydraulic pump leg stockings to keep the blood flowing.
Trying to get out of bed as soon as possible also helps. I don't know much
about P.E. but this is what I have heard. Hugs, Kim S. Open RNY Nov. 4/02

Hi. I was told to have a greenfield filter that they insert into your Cava
vein to capture blood clots and then it thins it out and distributes the
blood normally. But normally doctors only recommend that if you are 350 or
over. Good Luck :)

Blood clots are the biggest killer. They can largely be prevented by
walking. Beginning as soon as you get back in your room from recovery. Walk
the halls 3 or 4 times daily while your in the hospital. Once you home keep
moving, walking your neighborhood or go to the mall if its too cold. Not
only does this help prevent blood clots but it helps you recover faster.

Hi, My surgeon also had the nurses give me heparin shots right before
surgery and during my hospital stay. They give them in the stomach or
thigh, they were so small it wasn't painful. I also had the air compression
leg wraps before and for the first whole day after my surgery. I got up and
walked just a tiny bit the first day and they put me right back in them.
They weren't too comfortable, but I did it. After walking every 2 hours or
so, I didn't have to wear them when in bed anymore. Yeah! I think the
sooner you get up and get going, the lesser of a chance there is. I felt
like my surgeon and hospital were especially watching for pulmonary
problems or clots. RNY 08/15/02 -71lbs

PEs are a major risk for any surgery for the obese person due to the
immobility during and after surgery. They can happen even if you do
everything right, heparin shots, breathing exercises, leg compressors, and
walking as soon as possible. I know they can still happen because I did
all of this and still had one. My advice is communicate with your doctor
and hospital staff, if you aren't feeling well after the surgery, tell
them! I did and they ran tests and found the PE thank God my doctors
listened to me. After the PE, more heparin shots and 6 months of coumadin.
Even with the scare and the hassle of coumadin the WLS was still the best
decision of my life!! - Kelley 11 months post op and 121# lost!!
