Question:
How many of you are considering a career change after WLS
Im sure this has been asked a million times but would just like to hear how many of you plan to make or have at least thought about a career change after WLS and if yoy didnt hae the surgery would you still consider changing careers. I personally intend to re pursue the acting career that I left behind several years ago when I started having kids.I also told my kids that Im gong to go back to dance classes and become one of those music video girls(LOL)of course they just laugh at me because I am 37 but hey so are Janet Jackson and Halle Berry! — Lisa F. I forgot who penned this line, but I've found it to be true and it has
haunted me all my life. "Of all the words of tongue or pen, the
saddest are these: It might have been". I say follow your dream. I
missed out on so many things in life as I thought I'd tick off the
almighty. Now I'm the one who is ticked off that I did'nt follow my heart.
Oh how those words of the poet haunt me. You may never reach your dream,
but then again you may. Go for it! And remember us "little
people" (pun intended) when you get to the top. (Or at least this
little person- lol). ;)

Yup, sure am! I started school again 3 weeks ago to become a licensed
massage therapist. I have always wanted to do that but 105 lbs. ago ... no
way. It requires me to be massaged by the other students as practice and
there's no way I would have gotten practically naked on a table for anyone.
Plus, I wouldn't have had the range of motion or flexibilty to be able to
do massage myself. It's going great so far.

Hi...definately...this domestic goddess gig is wearing thin..lol. Actually,
I have knocked around going to nursing school for some time but will look
for opportunities to volunteer in hospitals/hospice to scratch the medical
itch I have. My REAL dream is to open an English Tea Room w/ tea pots,
scones, the cucumber sandwiches..the whole nine yards...very elegant yet
relaxing. I figure the servings will be perfect sizes for gastric bypass
patients (grin). In fact, if anyone has experience in this area or has
visited a favorite tea room somewhere..I would love feedback to add to my
'things to consider' notes.

Yes, I am dying to become a flight attendant, something I wouldn't even
think about 120 pounds ago, Now I am trying to become a flight attendant
very soon. I have been on interview but haven't heard anything yet. I love
those informs, the idea of traveling really gets my motor rolling. And I
love airplanes and pilots lol If anyone out there can help or give me
advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I am 11 weeks post op, and have been a hairdresser for the last seven
years. I don't really like the career, and like some of the other posters,
I want to be a nurse. An LPN to be exact. I want to go back to school,
but I know being over 300 pounds and being on your feet all day at a
hospital must be terrible. I can't wait to get more weight off, go to
school, and do what I've always wanted to do. A little off topic here, but
are there any LPN's who could email me privately and tell me about their
jobs, advantages/disadvantages, etc.? Hugs, Kim S. Open RNY Nov.4/02 (-73)

Hi there, Lisa! Great question. Although, I'm sure this isn't the
greatest or most motivating of career changes, but I recently began taking
courses to become a Pet Groomer. ( I am currently a seamstress) I love
working with animals, but never had enough energy to chase after them or
the strength to lift them up. After dropping surgery helped me to drop a
few lbs., I find I can actually play with our kitties now! I had thought
about being a Vet Tech, but don't have the heart to see animals hurt, so my
husband is taking the courses for that career! Vi open RNY 9/23/02 down
93 lbs.

I just got a new job (18 months out) and I'm in a dream position that I
would have never got when I was heavy.

Well yes,
I have thought of changing careers. I have a degree in Entomology and I
have never used it. I would love to get a job in my field. Actually I
wanted to be a Forensic Entomologist.... That is my dream...
Dreams do come true.

Well, having seen this question recycled around for the past few days, I
can't resist adding my two cents...I am not looking in to a career change,
but rather going back to the career I love, which is being a hotel
Concierge. I am super excited about this because I now have more of the
"image" one would expect in an upscale hotel, which (to be crass)
should equal even more tips/$$ for me. Plus, when I was a concierge before
(until 9/11) I managed to pack on some serious poundage due to all the
receptions, dinners, etc....this time I KNOW that won't happen, and I am so
happy about that. I am now exploring two possibilities and can't wait to
get back at it. One thing though...even though I haven't enjoyed my
booring govt. job (and all the travel it entails) there is no way I could
have had WLS without the great ins. my company provides. So things always
have a way of working out...In the words of A. Schwartzenegger...I'LL BE
BACK...and better than ever!
