Question:
Carbs-Can someone tell me for sure how much?

I'm almost a year out now and I know we should be getting 60 grams of protein per day....but what about carbs, and calories. How much should I be getting of those.....at one year out. I want to maintain my weight now, not lose anymore. Thanks.    — Jennifer M. (posted on January 16, 2003)

Please keep in mind that 60 g of protein only has 240 calories (4 calories per gram of carb and protein, 9 per gram of fat). So, if you want to maintain, you'll need to up that total. Also, your body NEEDS protein, carbs and fat to function properly. You do want to stay with healthy carbs, fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc. It's something you might want to see a dietician about.

I am almost a year out myself but still want to lose another 15 or so. I think the calorie amount to settle on is going to be different for everyone. What you need to do is if you find that you are still losing weight, then up the calories by a few hundred a day and see if that works-I think you will have to tweak until you get the right amount of calories for your body. My nutritionist said that for me it will probably settle at between 1200 - 1400, but I am 5'3 and hope to settle at 140 or so. As for carbs, she recommends that we stay below 100 a day. Truthfully I do not count carbs, just try to eat the good ones and minimize the bad ones. As for what Gar said below that 60 grams of protein equals 240 calories, keep in mind that there are other calories in food besides protein. 4 oz of chicken has the same amount of protein in it but would have different amounts of calories if it was fried, or dark meat vs. white meat.

My surgeon (Terry Simpson, AZ) says in order to maintain weightloss you need to keep your carbs at 60 grams per day & 40 or less per day to loose.

My nutritionist recommedns no more than 90 grams of carbs. She did say including some whole gain would be fine is at maitance leve. SUch as triscuts or low fat wheat thins etc. She also said some potaotes with cheese can be a nice treat. Just depends on how your body responds.
