Question:
SINCE SURGERY I HAVE DUMPED ON SWEETS.....
NOW IN THE LAST MONTH I CAN EAT SWEETS AND NOT DUMP. COULD THIS BE BECAUSE OF A STAPLE LINE DISRUPTION? DR. IS SENDING ME FOR A UPPER GI, CAUSE I AM HUNGRY ALL THE TIME AND DON'T GET FULL. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF NOT DUMPING ANYMORE IS A SIGN ALSO OF A SLD? — Gale G. (posted on December 21, 2002)

Gale - it is my understanding that even if you initially dumped on sweets,
if you continue to eat them, you will eventually build a tolerance for
them. Why are you eating sweets anyhow - especially when you dumped on
them to begin with? I don't know about the SLD and dumping, but you can
reset your dump-o-meter as per Michelle Curran. But you have to eliminate
all sugar from your diet...JR (open RNY 07/17 -126 pounds)

I second John's statement and would like to add that eating sugar can
induce hunger as well. I've never read anything that indicated that no
dumping and SLD had any connection...but if you discover it does, I'd be
interested. I believe your profile said you had surgery in September...and
I seem to remember at about 3 months out I too experienced a lot more
hunger than before, so maybe that is a culprit as well. I would also agree
with your daughter that diet pop does for some people increase your
appetite. So can any artificial sweetner. Not in all people, but
certainly in some. 1800 calories is a whole bunch to be eating in one day.
Are you still eating pizza, crackers, and soups? I'd really recommend
(and this is just my lame two cents) that you stick to dense, quality
proteins (fish, fowl, pork, beef, eggs, soy, etc.) and avoid breads,
doughs, crackers and soups (flush thru the system too quickly). Anyway
like I said, just a thought and hope you and your doc can figure out what
is going on. Best of luck to you and congrats on what you've accomplished
thus far!
