Question:
Pre-op exam found a heart murmer.
Never knew I had one. They are sending me back to my PCP for testing and Med. Can I still have WLS surgery? — Marion T. (posted on November 24, 2002)

Marion, They found a heart murmer in me also. I am scheduled to have
surgery 11-27-02. The Dr. does not seem to be conserned about it , because
I have the green light to go with the cleansing part tomarrow. God Bless
and have a pleasant journy. Judy

You may need to have a cardiology clearance, but often when we have
patients that have heart murmurs they are cleared medically and then they
get 2 different antibiotics pre-op to prevent problems.

Many women have heart murmurs, without symptoms, and don't know it until a
doctor "hears" it during a check-up. I've had one all my adult
life. The only med I've ever had was an antibiotic 12 hrs before any
dental work. My WLS doctor ordered a pre-op echocardiogram on me to check
for leakage of the valve. The echo was unremarkable and I was ok'd for
surgery with no problems whatsoever.
