Question:
Has anyone experienced a nasty taste in their mouth newly post-op?

I am 6 days post-op, and have a very nasty taste in my mouth. No matter what I do this taste is always there. Please someone tell me that this is going to go away. Thank you.    — Krystal H. (posted on November 24, 2002)

Hi Krystal, I had the same problem for around a week or two. I was told it was from the anesthesia. I know what you mean, it's terrible! I had it again after my gallbladder surgery a few months ago. But don't worry, it should go away. I would give it another week and if it doesn't, then ask your doctor. Good luck! -open Rny 9/14/01, down 176 lbs.

I think you're in a state of ketosis. It's been so long since I've been there, I forget all of the particulars about it. But, if you look it up in the library there will be lots of info. It does go away, but for the first few weeks it's NASTY. It has to do with the low carb intake. Double check with your surgeon, there could be other reasons I'm sure...but I'm thinking ketosis. Best wishes! -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -140lbs

Try the Listerine breath strips. They worked the best for me. Wrigley has started making a brand that's pretty good too. They have a cinnamon flavor. Myntz has a sugarfree version an the cinnamon is yummy.

The large majority of bad breath and bad tastes in the mouth comes from the tongue. Go to any pharmacy or any dept. store that has a section with toothbrushes and toothpaste and get a tongue scraper. Use this 2-3 times a day to begin with and then when the bad taste/odor goes away, use it daily before brushing the teeth. It makes a world of difference! The tongue is not smooth...the tastebuds are little projectiles and they harbor bacteria and, hence, bad odors and tastes. Good luck!

I have heard that the nasty breath early post op is from being in Ketosis. It eventually goes away.

hi there very new post op i had this problem too. i think its due to anistetics and the type of surgery. later on after your losing weight and intaking alot of protein the bad breath will be due to the fact that your most likely in ketosis. the bad taste post op was almost unbearable, it made me wanna yak, it made any thing i ate or drank taste just like it. it got better as time went on. good luck and hang in there. it will get better. :)

Yes, I had a nasty taste in my mouth. It was caused by thrush, which is a yeast infection. If your tongue looks white then that may be your problem also. There is medication for this problem and most people get over it in about a week to 10 days. I, however, was not so lucky. Mine lasted 9 weeks and in addition to the nasty taste it caused me to throw up every time I ate. Drinks tasted horrible; food tasted horrible and because of the thrush I was unable to even take the medication. I ended up in the hospital because of dehydration. But it passed and all is well now. Now I take acidophalus daily to prevent this from happening again. Ask your doctor. He/She should be able to help you sort it out.
