Question:
Has anyone used the bari bears?

I am wondering if they are worth the $$ to get one. If they help more than a regular pillow will, I will get one. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this bear :)    — Lori P. (posted on November 12, 2002)

I thought that since they looked so small, a pillow would work just as well. In my case, nothing worked as I could take no pain meds. So coughing hurt like heck! I don't think the bear would have made any difference. The problem I had with the pillow was getting the right pressure. The worst was the ride home, my suggestion for that would be take 2 pillows and really pack them up against your abdomen. The 2nd pillow will help put pressure on the 1st. But I won't lie to you, it hurt. The pain does not last long, thought, and if you are fortunate enough to have some good drugs you'll be fine! Renee D

I did not get a bear, I didn't know about them before my surgery. But if I did know, I probabally wouldn't have gotten one. I used a throw pillow, it was about 15" X 15" and it was my BEST friend! Use it to support your incision when you cough, and when you move! Getting up and down out of chairs hurts less with the pillow.

Don't know about the bear, but my family took a pillowcase and wrote me all kinds of notes in permanent ink (not to be read til I was back in my room). How neat it was to read their notes post op!! By far my pillow was the BEST thing I had during my hospital stay. (I got a post op pneumonia, and used it for weeks splinting my incision every time I coughed).

I had a bari-bear because I thought they were really cute and hey what a great idea. I never used it. BTC gave us a "cough pillow" which is all I ever used. The bear just sits in my room. Open RNY 9-23-02 -45.5lbs

Aloha!! YES!! My Bari-Buddy was my best friend while I was in ICU and throughout my hospitalization!!! Whenever I would sit up in bed, I used him as a splint. When I coughed, he was there. When I went for my first walk 5 hours after surgery, he splinted my abdomen!! He didn't leave my side til I left the hospital. Was he worth it? EVERY PENNY!!!! Plus, he is just the cutest little thing!! Short and wide.....just like I used to be! LOL Hugs, Kathie (in Hawaii).......................

My husband got me a stuffed penguin who is very soft and cuddly. He gave him to me while I was still in recovery. I promptly named him "Elmer" after my surgeon. "Elmer" never left my side throughout my hospital stay. I used him for my incision...I used him to cuddle when I got lonely or even a little frightened (they let me take him with me for my leak test) I held him while I did my "hall-crawl". Today, a year later "Elmer" sits next to my bed and is a very big part of my life...even now. I just bought myself new pj's for the winter, and they have penguins all over them...or as my youngest son calls them : pengweeens!! Anyway...that's what I did. Use something that you feel is comfy!! Have a Sparkling Day!!! ~CAE~

Waste of money for me- but I don't collect bares. Gave mine away. The hospital provided a rolled up material thing that was better than a pillow. You could meke one - roll up thin towels or something and tie it with a couple of strips of material. As big or long as you want.
