Question:
Has anyone 100 lbs over ideal weight had an Open RNY and NOT lost the weight?

Hi Everyone - I am scheduled 12/6/02 for Open RNY and am 100 lbs overweight. I am scared to Death! that I won't lose the weight or I'll get to the same plateau (170 lbs) that I've reached for the last 15 years. I want to get to 140 pounds...my ideal. I'm 255 now and 5'7" - I guess I have the pre-surgery jitters - I just CANNOT fail again...I couldn't take it one more time.    — Debra L. H. (posted on November 9, 2002)

Hi, your question was pretty interesting. I HAVE NEVER heard of anyone not losing the weight. Maybe not 100 % of there weight, but enough for them to regain most of their health. This surgery is only a tool to assist you in losing the weight, but ultimately its totally up to you. Best of luck,

Hi, My name is Lori....out stats are pretty close. I was 230 pounds and 5'7" at the time of my surgery. It is now 1 year later (I had surgery on Oct 16, 2001). The results are better than I ever imagined they would be. My Dr's goal was to get me to 147. (that is what the charts say) My personal goal was to get down to 135. I am now 129 pounds. Yes, I said 129 pounds. I am 5'7" and weigh 129 pounds. Sorry, but I love to say that!!! LOL I have never felt better. This surgery has been the best thing I have ever done!! I now wear clothes that I want to wear...not what is available in my size. I am in a very comfy size 8. My husband and kids LOVE the results!!! Dont worry, you will do just fine. Good Luck!!!

I understand your hesitation and fear. I lost about 96 pounds on Optifast 10 years ago, only to regain it and more. I'm around 90 pounds over now. My surgery date is 12/2 for open rny. Due to some health issues that have arisen, I am at the point of having to lose the weight--for good. I too am afraid of regaining, not meeting my goal (of losing and having better health), and just the overall idea of, well, disgust with myself. I have okay self-esteem in some regards, but feel society is waiting with all eyes looking at me, waiting for the "there she goes again..." I am praying and working now to instill lifelong habits that will help me use this tool of my "mini-me" tummy after the surgery. Best wishes.

Hello! I can relate to your question because I am currently "stuck" in my weight loss and very afraid that I will end up just as I was thru the 90s with an extra 40lbs or so to lose. WHile I have lost 70lbs in seven months, I still have a ways to go, and am very afraid that I won't make it to my goal of a size 8. But at least I am in a functional size 14. Who knows?
