Question:
I am 4 mos post op and would like to know how much am I suppose to eat now?
Most of the time I eat about 1 meal a day and sometimes I dont eat at all. There is days where I find my self snacking all day, but very few. Am I eating enough or should I still be eating small amounts like I am. Also, I eat about 25 carbohydrates a day is that too much or is that right? — Virginia P. (posted on November 4, 2002)

Virginia, at 4 months post op you should be eating at least 3 meals a day.
Should have been doing that all along. That said, you should be eating
basically anything you want concentrating on protein first and then the
fruits and veggies. You want to try and eat balanced meals. I would stay
away from carbs like, bread, rice, pasta etc. only eating those
occasionally and in small amounts. You didn't mention if you are taking
vitamins. If you aren't, you had better start. It is very important to take
your supplements to avoid other health problems due to vitamin defeciencies
down the road. Don't be afraid to eat. Just eat in moderation.

one meal a day is certianly not enough. And not eating at all is very
dangerous. Snacking does not provide you with nutritional content that will
meet your bodies needs. THis surgery is suposed to help with portion
control, not be an excuse for continued poor eating habits. I know that it
can be hard at times, but you must eat nutritious meals, not big ones, but
ones with good quality that give you the protein and vitamins that you
need. IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE TO DO THIS, it is very possible that you could
become malnourished and that can cause grave illness in you, even death.
Please, for your sake, get a handle on your eating habits.

I will be 4 months post op on the 11th of this month. I don't know how you
have any energy with only eating once per day. I eat 3 meals a day and
sometimes I eat a snack so that I get some fruit in. My meals usually
consist of 1/4 c. protein and a couple tablespoons of veggies and a
tablespoon or so of whatever we made with it. There are days where I don't
feel like eating and may only eat a couple of times. You really should be
eating more and taking your vitamins. After all, you didn't go through all
this to make yourself sick didja? =)

Virginia, whether you feel like eating or not, you must do so, and at least
3 meals a day. At about 4 months I was eating 4 meals a day with a few
snacks, small amounts at each meal, mostly concentrating on protein. Are
you drinking protein shakes to supplement for your lack of food? You can
do that if you really can't eat, but you are not getting in enough protein
with 1 meal to sustain your bodies needs. Find some protein items you like
and ensure that you eat something every 3 or 4 hours. Your body needs fuel
to burn those calories/regulate the metabolism and to get rid of fat and
not muscle. Your carb intake is fine, some people keep it low like you and
others have a higher carb intake-mine is probably closer to 100, but its
your choice. The important lesson here is to up your protein intake to at
least 60 grams a day. And ensure that you drink plenty of water and take
vitamins. We care about you!!

As the others have said, you need to eat. Even if you only eat 2-4 oz at a
time try to eat at least every 3-4 hours. At your stage you should be
getting in between 600-800 calories a day, at least 70 grams of protein,
and 64+ oz of water. Be sure you're taking your vitamins, calcium, B 12,
and iron (if needed). If you don't take in enough calories your body will
go into starvation mode and you'll stop losing weight!

ketosis for too long.
