I don't like shakes either. I mix protein powder with applesauce or pear
sauce. It works best in pear sauce because pears have a gritty texture.
Sometimes I freeze the sauce and eat frozen slush, which is very nice. You
can mix it into soups, sauces and gravies too. I use Naturade.

Unfortunately, protein is a bulky substance, so if you imagine 2 scoops of
protein powder compressed into pills you can imagine how many you'd have to
take. I checked into it somewhere one time (and I don't remember where).
I was excited because I actually found protein pills.....but the joke was
on me. In order to get my required 71 grams of protein, I'd have had to
take like 38 of these large pills a day. Cut in half that would be 72
pills. Lets see....5 minuts apart for 72 pills....it would only take me a
little over 5 and a half hours to get them all in.....I chose to force down
a protein drink instead! LOL

Gale, you are almost 2 months post-op...If you don't like shakes (and who
does by the way), can I ask why you still are drinking shakes? Are you
having a hard time with food? I am 2/12 months post-op and I can easily
get 60-90g of protein per day?

Gail, they do have protein pills, bit only have about 1-2 grams per
pill, which means you would need to take about 50-75 a day.If you can't eat
meat, I like EAS Simply Protein Chocalate powder.I think it tastes pretty
good.I get it at GNC or you can order it off the net.EAS also makes a
premix shake, which is myoplex and they taste good, but expensive.

Try Real Meals. It has 60 grams of protein plus over 40 other vitamins and
nutrients. Including biotin (to prevent hair loss) and lean muscle
stimulators (to prevent sagging skin). I had tried about 10 other protein
supplements when I found this one. It was the only one I ever liked and
was able to tolerate. It actually tastes good!

http://www.vita4life.net ask for a free sample of the liquid protein. I
order the honey flavor, put in my water bottle with a splash of flat diet
orange soda, fill to the top with water. And I was the Queen of gagging
protein drinks! Try this one.

Gail, I don't much like the protien shakes either, but I have found a
trick. I use met-rx (not the original)vanila butter cream and milk
chocolate. I bought some flavored baking extracts (no cals) in various
flavors. I also use hi protein milk. Using my blender (let it rest before
you drink to get air out) I make recipee protein drinks. For example one
scoop chocolate and one scoop vanila 8oz milk and 1/4 teaspoon peppermint
extract tastes just like jack in the box's mint cookies & cream shake,
but here you get 33g protein and 200 cal. Like dreamcicles? Two scoops
vanilla, 8 oz hi protein milk, 1/4 teaspoon orange extract. Strawberry
banana smoothie, 2 scoops vanilla, milk, 1/4 tsp of each: strawberry
extract and banana extract. If you you can figure out how your favorite
pre op desserts are made to can make the best shakes. You can use any
protein mix you like becasue the extracts will mask the flavor. I use the
hi protein milk because it makes the shake creamier, you gain 100 cal and
10g protein with the milk. So it's a trade off. I drink three of these
shakes a day to get 99g protein. I'm still on full liquids so this is my
only diet. I hope that helped some!

If I recall correctly, I couldn't swallow a pill any larger than the tip of
an eraser for the first 3-4 months post-op. Pills may be more of a problem
for you than shakes, since then tend to get caught in your stoma.

I wanted to jump in here for a minute. I saw a post that someone was
eating a lot of protein. I thought, in the beginning, that if 70 was my
goal, then 90 was better, right? WRONG! If you are taking way more
protein that you were advised to take, check with a Registered Dietician.
They will tell you that over the long haul, going well over your required
amount consistently will actually hinder weight loss. Also, your body can
only process and digest 35g of protein at a time, so for anyone who is
downing 40-50 grams in a protein shake over a relatively fast period, I was
told that you are wasting 5-15 grams of it and to save it for later when
you body is ready to digest more.

I wanted to comment on what Lynette said... Yes, please be careful in going
OVERBOARD on protein. Excessive protein is VERY HARD on your kidneys (or
as in my case, MY KIDNEY--I lost once about 10 years ago). If you're
taking in that much protein--then you best be taking in a heckuva lot of
water...because water is ESSENTIAL to help ease the burden that protein
places on the kidneys. Be healthy! All the best....and yes, please check
with your respective doctors/dieticians.
