Question:
Is it normal to begin to have diarrhea almost constantly at 7 months out?
I am post Lap RNY 3/4/02, down 90 lbs. and feel really good. I am adhering to all the "rules." Within the last couple of weeks, I have begun having diarrhea on an almost daily basis. Is this supposed to happen at this point in the journey??? — ZaZa F. (posted on October 26, 2002)

I am 4.5 months out and am having the same problem. The doctor gave me a
Rx called Lomotil 2.5mg and so far it is working like a dream. I started it
yesterday and had 1 bm today. took 1 pill today and I'll see what tomorrow
brings. The pills are very small, alittle bigger than the head of a pin(
with the color balls ). Ask your doctor for some. I hope this helps you
like it has me.

If you want to take the non-prescription version of Lomotil, it is called
Immodium and is available in any drugstore (and most chain supermarkets).
There are generic versions of Immodium available too.
<p>
The Immodium pill is bigger than the Lomotil, but if you break it in half,
you should have no problems...JR

I'm eleven months out from Open RNY and had a bout of diahrrea last week.
My surgeon told me to eat chicken noodle soup and macaroni and cheese but
not to take Immodium or Pepto Bismol.

In answer to your question, I don't believe diarrhea is a "given"
at any point post-op. I'm 15 month post-op open RNY proximal. The only
diarrhea I have ever suffered was due to the ferrous sulfate my doctor put
me on. Nothing I took stopped it. When I stopped the ferrous sulfate the
diarrhea stopped within a couple of days. Is it possible you have a virus
or ate something that didn't agree with you? It would probably be a good
idea to check with your surgeon.

Zaza, I really don't remember when the diarreha started, but I have had it
for a very long time now. (I am 11 months post op). I take Lomotil,
colestid, and levison (for bowel spasms) every day just to control it, and
some days that doesn't work very good.
