Question:
HAS ANYONE ELSE GOTTEN.......

REAL COLD SINCE THEY HAVE SURGERY? I MEAN I USED TO COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT THE AC ON OR THE FAN ON ME IN THE WINTER, NOW ITS LIKE I AM COLD ALL THE TIME. I AM NOT COMPLAINING I WOULD RATHER BE COLD THAN POURING SWEAT, BUT IS IT BECAUSE I HAVE LOST 45 POUNDS?    — Gale G. (posted on October 23, 2002)

Hi Gale! I never thought I would say this, but I have been getting VERY cold since I had surgery. I was always the person who would sweat so much that it would look like I had just gotten out of the shower! (How disgusting is that? hehe) I had surgery on Oct. 1st and have probably lost a little over 20 lbs. so far and need blankets at night and need to wear long sleeve shirts or something warm all of the time. I do think it has something to do with our weight loss!

Gale..I AM THE SAME WAY!!! While in the hospital I kept my hospital room at 65 degrees..Now that I'm almost 4 weeks out I am literally FREEZING all the time..In fact yesterday during a post-op visit with my surgeon they took my temperature at it was 96 instead of the normal 98.6. I've turned on my heat and pulled out the sweaters and blankets. I've only lost 35lbs and can't imagine how I will feel when and I say WHEN I lose 100lbs!!! ~Traci~

Gale, I have been cold since I was about 2 months post op. I mean I freeze. My nose runs constantly from being so cold. I burn my DH and kids up. I slept with my electric blanket on all summer. I have asked my doctor and she said she had no ideas because all my labs are great. I was the only fool in Wal Mart in the middle of summer wearing a sweatshirt :)

You are so not alone! I am FREEZING all the time! I am 2 months out and have lost about 45 pounds. I thought it was just me, but I was always cold! then in talking to some people at the last support group meeting, I found I was not alone. I think it is ebcause we are so used to having all of that "insulation" and now that it is going away, our body gets colder. We are losing our "coat" so to speak! :-)

I had surgery almost a year ago and experienced 'the arctic blood' early on also. It was fall when I had my surgery, and winter was just around the corner, as it is now. I wanted nose warmers and I would go to bed early just to get under my electric blanket!! Summer was great, while everyone was sweatin' it out, I was comfortable. Now that I am at goal, it seems as if my body is adjusting to losing that insulation. I guess it just needs time to adjust or acclimate. I am still losing 3-4 lbs. a month, and is usually within the same week. That week I freeze, but then get comfy again. Just a pattern that I noticed with me. This is very common although not everyone experiences it.

I am the same way. I am driving my family crazy putting the heat on 90. I used to sweat all the time. Usually I never even wore a coat in the winter.

Hi Gale, I am 5 weeks out and down 34 pounds and freezing to death! :) I just put on warm clothes and it does the trick. I can't say that I miss being hot and sweaty all of the time. Might even be able to go out in the summer and not be miserable. I'm looking forward to that!

I have lost 64 pounds in 11 weeks and am also always freezing cold! I do not think it is only because of the reduction in fat insulation; i think it has more to do with the low-calorie intake. Chealsea

I had this 5 weeks ago 9/20 open rny and my SO had it done on 10/15 we are about the coldest people I have ever seen. I have never been so cold in all my life. I am cold to my bones. As soon as I was able to sit in the tub I ran the hottest water I could stand and just laid down in it as best I could then I would get out dry really quick and put on sweats, socks, and a flannel nighgown to hold in all the heat I just got. It is the craziest thing ever. Good luck I am going to go build my igloo now : p Peggy

I had my surgery October 1st and began getting cold before I left the hospital and have been cold ever since. I have always been hot and would put off wearing a coat or jacket till it was freezing out. I think even though I've only lost about 15 lbs so far, that it's because we are losing fat which has been our insulation. I'm looking forward to being comfortable next summer instead of my usual sweating. Mycki Nissen

I am the frost queen now. This is a very common 'problem' among posties, and I am 2 years post and it has not gone away. I usually need to take a hot bath to get really warmed up once I get cold. Our support groups are hilarious, all the pre-ops are sweating, all the posties are freezing. The loss of insulation so quickly is such a shock to the body, that's all I can think it is. I keep a sweatjacket and a blanket in the car all the time and have changed my dressing accordingly. Good Luck to you.

Well, I am glad to see that I am not the only nut that has to get up in the middle of the night and take a hot bath so that I can get warm enough to go to sleep! I had the surgery done 16 months ago and have lost about 130 pounds. I started getting cold right away. Last winter I thought I was going to freeze to death! It has gotten a little better though. I agree that it may be the amount of calories that we are able to take in. I am certainly taking in more now than right after surgery.
