Question:
I am now 2 1/2 months post op from lap RNY and have only lost 40 lbs so far.
I have been exercising (cardio and light weights) 4 to5 days/week. I am not excessivly eating though perhaps not drinking enough water. I'm getting very frustrated because I hear and read about others who had the same procedure and are in the same time frame and are around 60+loss. HELP!!! — Heidi C. (posted on October 10, 2002)

dont move, the inches do. hang in there, it also depends on what u

You are doing better than I am. I'm 6 weeks out and 26 lb. down. I'm also
over 60 and really haven't gotten into exercise yet. I'm eating 6 small
meals a day and trying to maintain a balanced diet. Don't worry. Slow is
OK with me. When I see what I eat now compared to what I used to, I know
I'll loose weight! Slow may be better for our skin anyway...be patient..it
will definitely come off.

You said that you may not be getting in enough water, you need the water to
loose. Also, how many grams of protein are you getting in a day? There
can also be differences in peoples weight loss depending on how many inches
of intestines were bypassed, was your surgery proximal or distal? Ifyou
need more protein check out www.protein-solution.com

Haven't you ever heard not to compare your weight loss to others? I can't
begin to tell you how many times I have repeated this to new post-ops who
worry that the surgery has failed for them or that they have
"only" lost this much when compared to to others...sweetie, you
are doing fine. Just make sure that you are eating enough-yes, the more
you eat, the better. If you eat too little, the body thinks that you are
starving it and it will slow down the metabolism to hold onto whats left.
And ensure that you are concentrating on protein and getting in lots of
water. Your exercise level is great. It will happen-just be patient.

Maybe I can help you feel better about your loss: I am 3 1/2 months out and
have lost 35 pounds. You have me beat by 1 month and 10 pounds. And you
know, most of the time I'm pretty darn pround of that loss - I have worked
hard to get to this point. Please listen to everyone who says not to
compare yourself with others. I know everyone just wants some encouragement
when they post questions like these, but it sure gets me down and
discouraged when I see "I've ONLY lost xx pounds in xx weeks" and
it's ALWAYS more than I lost. Good Luck and I hope you get to the point you
want to be at.

This is right on track with what I lost only I wasn't as diligent with the
exercise as you are. Don't worry. I can't imagine working as hard as you
are that your body won't respond, it just takes patience. I am now 8
months post op and have lost right at 100 pounds! Just remeber - before
surgery would you have ever lost 40 pounds in 2 months and known it would
stay off? You're doing great!

I am out almost 4 months and I am in the same boat with you. I exercise
and all that good stuff. My husband says that I may be gaining muscle and
won't see a change in the scale. You should be losing good inches though.
That is what matter really. :-) You are doing fine.

I am post op 6months. I have lost 70lbs. I was told that when you start
lifting any kind of weights, you will gain muscle and lose fat. You will
begin to look different and the scales won't change much. I can tell that
since this, I have gone from a size 14 to a size 10. So I know that this
is true. Hang in there you will begin to see results in a different manner
than the scales with time.

Heidi, Are you losing inches? I'm about 9 weeks post-op. I have only
lost 42 pounds and, trust me, I was not a lightweight to start. However, I
have lost inches galore. Are you seeing a difference in the way your
clothes fit? Are you able to go down to a smaller size. On top, I've gone
from a size 26/28 to a size 18/20. On bottom, I've gone from around a size
30 to a size 24. So, why do you say only 42 pounds? There are lots of
other things that contribute to weight loss. Tiffany =)

I don't have any advice or opinions but I sure can relate to your feelings.
Yesterday I went for my 8 week checkup postop and I have lost 39 pounds.
My first 4 weeks I lost 27 and the second 4 weeks only 12 pounds. I was
happy enough with that though I wished it were more but my surgeon told me
that it should be more for me. :( He said that I should be loosing 10% of
my body weight per month for the first few months. My starting weight was
354 and I am an almost 6'tall girl. I really expected based on what he
told me and my starting weight to have lost 50 pounds. But still I was
happy till my surgeon let me know I wasn't where I was supposed to be. We
went over what I was eating and drinking and he thinks the hold up for me
was lack of activity but you certainly aren't experiencing that. You
didn't say what your start out weight was either so maybe you are right
where your supposed to be. I started Curves today and I want to do all I
can to loose this weight. I think as long as we are loosing we are good and
the surgery is a success. I let myself get real down last night about not
being up to where statistics say I should be but then I came here and read
and I went over what I eat in my head and I know I haven't been well enough
till the past week to exercise and I realized I'm doing the best I can and
it's good enough. Sounds like you are doing your best too. Carrie
