i have been able to take protaz (sp?) since a week after surgery. i would talk to your doctor, about other drugs, that don't cause weight gain--there must be others.

Hi...I take Zoloft and Risperdal and have not had any problem with weight gain. I've lost 77 lbs. in almost 5 months. I did start back on my meds about 5 days post-op, though...I felt a depression coming on and wanted to avoid it at all costs! Certainly if you're bipolar you would need your meds up-to-speed as soon as possible to avoid a depression/mania. I would certainly speak to your doctor about the Zyprexa and get some info about weight gain and whether or not there are alternatives for you out there, should weight gain occur. I know it's really hard to get the combination right for bipolar...so I would speak to the doc ASAP. Good luck. Hugs, Joy

I have problems swallowing pills. I did it just fine before surgery, but now I just can't make myself swallow pills for the life of me. I even have to take chewable vitamins.

Hi! I am bipolar too. I was taking Zyprexa, but was changed to quetiapine fumar (Seralux) because of the weight gain. Maybe your doc can check it out and see if it might be appropriate for you. I am having good results with it. Good luck.

I also suffer from bipolar disorder. I take tegretol (chewables) and Wellbutrin. This is my current "cocktail" as I've tried many others in the past. Maybe it's time to check in with your psychiatrist to find something with which you are more comfortable. I started taking my meds two days post op. Good luck!
