Question:
At what weight do we stop being morbidly obese?
I've lost 80 pounds. I'm 5'3 and weigh 234 now. How do I know when I'm no longer morbidly obese, and am just obese, and then when I'm no longer obese? Open RNY 5-2-02 — candymom64 (posted on September 20, 2002)

I don't know who decides these things; they seem kind of arbitrary. But if
you calculate your BMI on this site, there's a chart showing how you fit
into each category by your BMI.

Hi...Funny you ask this as I just had my checkup with Dr. today and we were
talking about that. I had a BMI of 54 and am now at 42, and she said she
was hoping I'd no longer be mo this visit and I only had 3 BMI points to go
(being 39). She said each point is valued at around 7 pounds. I have lost
72# according to their scale so need to lose about 21 more. I am
5'6". Hope this helps somewhat.

I believe MO is defined by a person being 100#'s or more over their ideal
weight. I think the defination of obese is 20% over ideal weight....

Its determined by your BMI-body mass index. I checked it out for you-at
your current height/weight, your BMI is 41.5 which still is morbidly obese.
However, lose 10 more and you move to the severely obese category..the
categories after that are obese, then overweight, then normal. I don't
necessarily believe in the categories as Tom Cruise and my musclebound,
less than 10 percent body fat husband are both considered overweight by the
BMI tables...
