Question:
Any suggestions on getting water or any liquids down?

I am reaaly having a time swallowing any liquids. I would love to drink caffiene-free diet cola, but I know why that doesn't go down well. (My doctor says ok to this if tolerated) But water doesn't go down much better. Any suggestions or comments welcome.    — Kathy L. H. (posted on September 15, 2002)

Earlly on water tasted YUK, but strong sugar free koolaid covered the taste and is yummy. I still drink it every day with lots of ice.

How far out are you from surgery? I had trouble swallowing liquids for a few weeks post op. It really was uncomfortable for me. About three-four weeks post op this dissapeared and now I can almost guzzle like I used too. (But not quite) Definitely add the Crystal Light, they even now have some that has added calcium to it in really great flavors. They also have some diet Snapple drinks that are yummy. In the morning, I start out with a cup of sugar free hot chocolate and then start on my crystal light. It kinda gets me going. I still have a hard time getting the whole 64 ounces in a day. I usually average 45 ounces...but am really working to up that some more. My biggest problem is not being thirsty. The only time I am REALLY thirsty is during meals...which we shouldn't be drinking with. Good luck to you! (open RNY 7/23/02 -55 lbs)

I have lived on Crystal Light lemonade for the past 9 months. Anything counts as water as long as there is no caffiene in it. Have you tried decaf tea, ice chips, diluted fruit juice, frozen diluted fruit juice, sugar free popsicles? As time goes on, the liquids go down better. I don't know how post op you are but , you have to figure out what works best for you at this point in time. If I were you, I'd stay away from the soda, diet or otherwise. There is just TOO MANY doctors who say to stay away from it (carbonation) for 6 months to a year.

Kathy, the EASIEST way to get water down...WALK WALK and WALK. You have surgery 2 days before me so, we are on a similiar timne schedule. While walking, I can GULP, drink fast and water does down VERY easily. I can drink a good 32 oz in 1/2-1 hr...I am not sure of your exercise routine, but, since you should be walking daily if not more frequently, bring a big thing of cold water...you'd be surprised and how quickly you will be at your daily total. Good Luck.

Any non-caffeinated drink is good. I like Diet Snapple - both the Pink Lemonade and the Lemon Tea (I know it's not decaf, so I drink extra fluids to make up for it - I don't have it that often). I also like Lipton's Decaf Diet Ice Tea mix with Lemon and Wyler's Lite Lemonade and Pink Lemonade and also Crystal Light.

Hi Kathy: What I've learned is 30 min before and 60 min after eating, NO fluids. Otherwise, 4 oz. every 30 min. My Dr. says "time for eating and time for drinking." Hope this helps some! Good Luck

Hi Kathy--I see you're about a month post-op. Maybe it's too late for this advice, since it's really for new posties, but maybe you can freeze some liquids (crystal lite, watered-down juices, gatorade, or whatever) and put them in the form of popsicles. I found popsicles to be the easiest way to get liquids in.

Kathy, For the first two months or so, hot liquids went down better for me. Get yoursef some decaff teas and try that.
