Question:
I ATE 3 TSP. WENDYS CHILI....

AND I THINK I JUST DUMPED, DIARHEA CAME WITHOUT A SIGN AND I GOT REAL DIZZY. DOES CHILI HAVE SUGAR IN IT? I WILL NOT EAT THAT AGAIN. ALSO SOMETIMES WHEN I EAT APPLESAUCE, 5 MINUTES LATER I CAN'T HOLD MY EYES OPEN WHY? — Gale G. (posted on September 14, 2002)

I never had problems with Wendy's chili. However as far as the applesauce, I'm guesing that that is high in carbohydrates. For me anyway, carbs put me to sleep. (And make me more hungry).

Here is the ingredient list for Wendy's chili (from their web site): Chili Ground Beef, Chili Base (Tomatoes, Salt, Citric Acid, Calcium Chloride), Chili Seasoning (Maltodextrin, Tomato Powder, Salt, Corn Starch Modified, Chili Pepper, Sugar, Onion, Spices, Dextrose, Garlic, Xanthan Gum [thickener], Citric Acid, Autolyzed Yeast, Paprika, Disodium Inosinate and Guanylate [flavor enhancers], Artificial Flavor, Contains 2% or less of Silicon Dioxide [anti-caking agent]), Vegetable Mix (Onions, Celery, Green Peppers), Kidney Beans (Kidney Beans, Water, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Salt, Natural Flavorings, Onion, Calcium Chloride, Disodium EDTA [preservative]), Chili Beans (Pink Beans, Water, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Salt, Natural Flavorings, Onion, Calcium Chloride).
So the answer is yes. According to the nutritional information on the same site, 8 oz of Wendy's chili contains 5g of sugar. You had 3 tsp. (or 1 tbsp.) which is 0.5 oz of Chili, so you had 1/16 of a serving. This should have been about 1/3 of a gram of sugar. Unless you are super-sensitive to sugar, I don't know if that is what made you dump. Maybe it was the spices in the chili that irritated your small intestine - how far out are you???
Regarding the applesauce, was it sweetened or unsweetened?

Sorry, I just saw that you were 10 days post-op. That may be too soon to try the Wendy's chili - I don't think I tried it the first time post-op until the end of week 4.

I think you did the equivalent of throwing a rock into your stoma(ch)! Hope you're feeling better. By 10 days postop, I was on full liquids (anything that goes through a straw). At 3 mos. out, I STILL don't do beef (too fibrous -- what's the rush?). Enjoy this time to heal - as well as drop the pounds quickly. Good luck.

Everything effects everyone differently, but I would say that the sugar did infact make you dunp. Watch out for spicy foods. IN this case, they made you dump, but they can also give you really painful gas which is not pleasant, either. As far as the applesauce, check the carb level because it could make you sleepy. I have no problems with mine. I have Musselman's Lite Applesauce. It is made with Splenda. Youmay just have to hold off on it for a while and go with somethings else. Try cottage cheese, or something else soft.

Hi Gale- Wow, 10 days out, you're braver than I was. I ate nothing but cream of wheat for the first month after my surgery. (I can't even look at the stuff anymore!) Don't try to rush it. I am 4 months out and there are so many things I couldn't eat even 2 weeks ago that I have no problem with now, so you'll find that as time goes on you'll be able to tolerate things much better. I never get sick when I dump but I do feel very tired when I overdo the sugar. Don't get discouraged, this is a long road you're on and you're really just getting started. You've got a lot of great things ahead of you! Keep up the great work. -Mike

Gale, please be careful...You shouldn't be eating chili so early. I am a month post op and I am just getting ready to try it. Your tummy is still like that of a babies'. Good Luck.

Diarrhea is not the same as dumping. Chili can give anyone fits! However, the applesauce putting you to sleep IS dumping. It is FULL of sugar, even the no sugar added version. I can safely eat 1/4 C of the NSA. Approach every new food with caution, read the labels, skip anything with more than 6g of sugar PER SERVING (not per container). Then you can maybe skip dumping.
