Question:
First off, I hate the taste of alcohol. So when I drink, it is only to get drunk. I

don't like beer, so I drink tequila; Usually Mezcal. I drink alot of it. I only do it about 4 times a year, but I usually drink a bottle myself. I have seen several posts regarding milder drinks. How will a drink this strong affect me after the surgery? Should I avoid it? I would hate to give up tequila and the effects completely.    — stroman69 (posted on August 30, 2002)

Before WLS I had about the same drinking habits as you, except I liked the taste of beer. Instead of tequila I like absenthe. You should not drink for the first 6months, but if you do (as I did) you will find that 1-2 shots gets you there. Remember you need to let your stomach heal. The better it heals the better the results. Good Lux

Can of worms; meet Michael. Michael meet AMOS' biggest can of worms ;) Before the posts start rolling in, accusing you of being an alcoholic (rolling my eyes) I just wanted to say- I don't like the taste of it either and usually will just do some BV shots with a Coors Light chaser. I just take it really easy. I also waited until about 7-8 mos. after surgery. About 10 mos after surgery-I got heavily involved in White Russians, but after realizing the caloric intake, I have avoided them. I also have ditched mixers. I am pretty sur eit is what made me lose my GB, since it had to work over time with all that fat & sugar. I think LeVine was right, you will NOT need the entire bottle (or probably want it for that matter) 1-2 shots will do the trick....

Oh MY goodness, a bottle of tequila will probably put you in the hospital post op!!! I am NOT kidding. I used to be able to drink a bottle of wine my self pre op (very rarely mind you, maybe twice a year), and barely feel anything. Now, I get light headed and numb lips from just one glass. I am not much of a drinker, never was preop either, but now I am even less of one. My suggestion is that you wait at least 4 months or so, so your stomach can completely heal, and then try it in very small mounts. Give the alcohol time to hit you before you take another drink. You may need to do that a few times before you kinda learn what your limitations are. I also have a favorite drink now...I use the diet ocean spray cran raspberry, put in it some smirnoff rasperry vodka and a splash of OJ...tastes great. Another one is put ice and a little water in a blender, add some SF tang and some orange smirnoff and you got your self a nice frozen drink. I choose vodka because it has fewer calories. And I like these becasue unlike doing shots, you can lessen the amount of alcohol and still have something to sip on with the group. Agian, drink both of these slow, ONe will probably do you in...

If you hate the taste of alochol why drink? I don't like the taste of alochol myself. Even drinking mixed drinks that masked the flavor? Do you really enjoy getting drunk?

I have had a couple of drinks since my surgery (4.5 months ago). I fould that I was tipsy after a couple of sips. We are supposed to avoid high calorie liquids (alcohol qualifies) as one of the rules for success. I agree with one of the other posters . . . a bottle of any alcohol will probably land you in the hospital.

First of all I don't want to sound like a prude or whatever because I used to like to drink as much as the next person when I would go out with friends. I've put away a few in my day. I'm only 6 weeks post op and haven't tried having any alcohol but why would you want to. The way it was explained to me was that it goes through your liver more than it did before because of the intestinal bypass. That is one of the reasons why you feel drunk faster. My question is WHY would you want to destroy your liver just to get drunk and feel like crap the next day?? That's the way that I look at it and one of the reasons that I am staying away from any alcoholic drinks. Just something to think about.

I just want to set the record straight. Mezcal is nasty and is not tequila. It's a dirivetive of tequila loaded with lots of grain alcohol. If you wanna drink tequila, make sure it's 100% pure Agave
