Question:
DOES EVERYONE HAVE.....
TO HAVE A CENTRAL LINE PUT IN WHEN THEY HAVE SURGERY? I WAS JUST WONDERING THAT. OR IS IT ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHOSE VEINS ARE SMALL AND THEY CAN'T GET A IV IN? — Gale G. (posted on August 29, 2002)

I can only speak for myself, I did not have a central line.

hiya
talk to your surgeon..each one does things differently
my surgeon required one plus one iv in each arm
they removed the arm ivs on the day after surgery but the central line
stayed in until the night before i left the hospital.
i was scared of having one but it wasn't a big deal...i did use a dose of
pain killers before it was removed because it is stapled in but it was out
quickly

I did not have a central line for the WLS, just an IV in the wrist,
however, I had emergency surgery 5 days afterthe WLS and did have a central
line put in then. The central was painless and not uncomfortable compared
to the hand IVs of which I had 2, 1 in each hand/wrist per surgery and I
still have the scars today from the IVs.

My surgeon required 2 IVs. They tried very hard to get them started in my
arms and were only successful in getting one started, so I got a central
line as a last resort in addition to the one in my hand. The central line
wasn't too bothersome, the tape was just itchy. They took it out right
before I was discharged.

My surgeon has all patients get a central line. Before surgery I had an IV
in my hand and they used that to give me some "happy drugs".
Then they took it out after I was under and put in my central line and
catheter. If I had a choice, I would have a central line again. IVs in my
hand always make my hand really sore and the central line didn't bother me
at all.

My surgeon requires everyone to have them. So they probably serve a good
purpose. I will be glad when I have my wls because last year I was
operated on and got the central line late in the game after they poked me
and prodded me until I was black and blue and had no where else to get
blood from. It was very convenient to open up the spigot every few hours
to draw blood from and put medicine in. Better than all the battle wounds.

The central line was painless? You guys must have had a much different
experience than me. They could not find my veins, so the anesthesiologist
had to put in a central line with no prior anesthetic. It REALLY HURT!!!
They had to put it in, whih was really bad, and then sew it in place, I can
still remember every milisecond of those stitches, then, finally bliss.
However, I do agree it was VERY nice to have post-op.
