Question:
6mths post-op, getting dizzy when I stand up.?!

Hi guys, I hadn't had a problem up until a month ago, and it doesn't happen everyday, but every now and then when I stand up(fast or slow) I get dizzy, and it's like my eyes flutter.....does anyone know what this is, I won't be able to see my doctor for another two weeks, just wondering if anyone's experienced similar symptoms?? Thanx for your time.    — Jennifer M. (posted on July 23, 2002)

Hi, I don't know if this is your problem, but I too was having dizzy spells when I would walk, turn my head or stand up. I am 3 & 1/2 months post-op and the thing that fixed my dizziness was taking B-12 injections instead of using the sublingual pills. You may be taking B-12 injections already, but sometimes people need to take two injections a month (one every two weeks). I have to take two a month and since I changed this I no longer have problems. Maybe you could call your doctor and see if he wants you to do this. I wouldn't change your B-12 until you have talked to your doctor, but this could possibly be the culprit!! Good Luck. Jennifer M. Hart

Have you checked your blood pressure. Sometimes if your blood pressure drops you will feel dizzy or woosy when standing up or making any sudden movements. If your blood pressure was normal before your diet and exercise may have lowered it and that could be causing your problem. Check your blood pressure and if it's low the next time you feel woosy or dizzy put a pinch of salt under your tongue, the sodium with sightly elevate your blood pressure.

It might also be possible that your blood pressure has come down since you have lost weight and this is causing the dizziness. My BP went from 150/110 to 112/70 in the first month after the surgery and I also felt dizzy when I got up too fast. - Mike

You have lost alot of weight in 6 months, CONGRATULATIONS. This may not be related but I had the same issues and my yoga teacher helped me out. When you are heavy you tend to throw your weight around get up fast to offset inertia<sp?>. Try to move more delibertatly. Use deliberate movements. Stand up slower and keep your head and neck in line. It helped me . Good Luck

I was also having this problem and my surgeon said that it was dehydration.

are you taking blood pressure meds? It seems when I felt like this, it was always a blood pressure thing. Maybe it's time to cut back or eliminate it, but the doc will know best. Enjoy your journey!

Check your blood pressure on or around the next dizzy spell, and then call your Dr. if it is low and he can reduce medicine by verbal order. Also, if it is not blood pressure, then it may be low blood sugar which you should also call your physician on, he may wish you to come get your finger stuck and sugar read if not blood pressure related. Either way, don't wait two weeks.

I had the same kind of spells and my surgeon told me to drink 1/2 cup to 1 cup of Pedialyte a day. He said that when you drop the weight you start to dehydrate yourself no matter how much water you drink. So I drank it for a while and have not had any problems since. Best of losin to you!! I am down 90 pounds in 4 months...
