Take a pillow for the ride home!!!! I cannot stress this enough! It was the worse part of the surgery for me! Good luck!

The piece of advice I could have used was knowing how intimidating it was to walk into that operating room. Remember that it's normal to feel a little scared but please remember that you're in very capable hands and that you'll wake up to a whole new you. It's the best decision you'll ever make. Best of luck to you.

The one thing that helped me the most on the morning of my surgery was listening to music. I repeated the same upbeat song until I got to the hospital and I was singing it in my head until my meds kicked in. They were already advised and prepared that I wanted something for relaxation while I waited.

i had major anxiety when i checked into the hospital, several crying attacks including right before the surgery...if this happens, ask for a valium - that should help. hopefully you'll have a good nursing team - that helped me enormously! take pain meds before leaving the hospital and definetly take a pillow or two for the ride home! if they won't let you drink anything (mine didn't) see if you can have these little spongy things that you wipe your gums & tongue with - they were a life saver! bring music with you, headphones, and books as well as a journal. and really loose clothes to wear home and slip on shoes! good luck to you!

Lisa--my advice would be to go into the surgery in a calm state--I was totally not nervous. I knew that God was with me and I had faith that he'd bless my surgeon and all would be fine. And it was!!!! I knew right before they knocked me out that when I awoke I would get my life back and that's exactly what I am doing. I'm 42 lbs down in 7 weeks (as of today--yay!) and little pieces of my esteem and confidence are trying to find their way back to the surface. So if you focus on Friday being like a new "birthday" perhaps that will place a smile on your face! Good luck and may God Bless you with a safe and successful journey. Bambi :o)

Aside from the usual preparations (groceries, packing, etc.), try to take a few moments to do something calming such as a long bubble bath, a massage, or whatever it is you do to relax yourself. And hug the people you love! You're about to embark on a journey to a whole new life. Congrats! :o)

1. Go and have a good "Before" picture taken. If you are like me, you have been hiding from cameras for years. You need to be able to have a good pic to remember where you started. You think you'll never forget -- but in a year you will look at that picture and just be amazed. You can go to Walmart, Sears, Penny's, wherever. But have one made. I did and it has been a great thing to keep before me during those tough days. I went to a Motophoto (in a strip mall) and they even put the picture on a disc for me. I went back a year later for an After pic, too. That was fun. 2. If you have been alot of different sizes in your life, go through your closet and arrange the clothes by size, so that as you lose you can work your way back through them. They probably won't last you very long, because you will go through sizes in a hurry. But it will be helpful to know what you have and where everything is. Then as you shrink out of them, take them to resale stores and get smaller clothes to replace them! Good luck. hugs, Ann RNY9/10/99 260/130

Oooooo- excellent advice- take many, many BEFORE pictures. Wear the same clothes whenever you take IN BETWEEN pictures- and stand in the same spot. I wish I had. I am really into scrapbooking now- with many cool ideas and I wish I could make a "WLS" book of before and after. It would be really neat to show others and add to it....
