Question:
Do they collapse your lung?
I was told today that during RNY surgery the surgeon has to collapse your left lung. Is this true? — Sandy B. (posted on July 22, 2002)

Four of us in our family have had lap RNY.....no collapsed lungs here! The
surgical area in all WLS procedures is below the diaphragm. Unless your
surgeon was combining two surgeries and doing an additional procedure in
the chest cavity, there would never be any reason to purposely collapse a
lung. However, in very rare cases, a patient might spontaneously
experience the collapse of a lung during surgery/anesthesia....a problem
easily corrected at the time.
