Question:
Hi everyone, I am new at this so please bear with me.

What are strictures, and how often after surgery do they show up? What makes one person get them and another not, is it body type os something like that. Thanks for you help! I appreciate all the info everyone gives.    — Mary C. (posted on June 29, 2002)

Hi! Strictures are blackages of the stoma. You may have an idea you have one if after the surgery, you cannot keep down any foods or liquids. They occur in about 5% of WLS patients, and who they happen to depends on the way your body heals...there is no one or particular body type. Hope this helps!

HiMary: A stricture is basically scar tissue...It all depends on how your body heals and IF you develope scar tissue around, in or near your new plumbing....I developed a stricture at 5 weeks post op and had to be stretched, but it has been FREE SAILING since that day....Guess I am ok...haven't thrown up since week #5....
