Question:
Can you get to much protein?
I was wondering if you can get to much protein, and if so how much is too much? thanks so much — Geralyn (posted on June 24, 2002)

The nutritionist I saw a couple of months back said if you get more than
80/day you will start causing liver damage. Be careful! Best of luck!

Depends on what you're doing with it. Working out? Training? Losing lots of
weight? How are you getting it? The bottom line is that your quarterly
blood work will provide a nice profile to see if you're gtting enough, too
little or too much, so you don't have to guess. Just collect your labs from
preop fwd.

I know people are often told different things. But i don't think more than
80grams of protein a day will cause liver damage. My surgeon and RN make
all their patients get ATLEAST 80 grams of protein a day for the first year
post-op. (which is really hard for me!) So maybe 100 grams a day could be
bad? i don't know the right answer! But all five surgeons in one hospital
and obesity center follow this plan. goodluck to you! :)

my understanding is that 25 grams in one meal is the most your body can
process at a time.
good luck!

At one month post-op I was not losing any weight, went to the doctor and he
told me to cut back on the protein because of all the extra calories. (4
calories per gram of protein) so if your getting enough with just your
meals there is no need for protein supliments. I would say stay within
40-60 grams
