Question:
DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO HAVE A ENDOSCOPY?
I WAS WONDERING IF EVERYONE HAD TO HAVE AN ENDOSCOPY, OR IS IT JUST FOR PATIENTS HAVE A LAP SURGERY. WHAT EXACTLY IS IT ANYWAY? JUST WONDERING. — Gale G. (posted on June 8, 2002)

I had to have endoscopy because I tested positive for h-pylori.
its just a simple test where they put a tiny camera down your throat and
look at the stomach, you will be sedated, the anxiety before the test was
worse than the test itself.
good luck!

No, I have never had one. In my support group it about 1 out of 5.

I had one and am glad I did; I had a hiatal hernia. The worst part was
starting the IV. They gave me Versed and when I was recovering from the
procedure, I asked when they were going to do it. Absolutely no sore
throat or trauma whatsoever.

My surgeon requires that all RNY patients have an endoscopy. Once you are
transected there will be no way to get a look at the inside of your
"old" stomache. This way you are assured that you have no
pre-existing condition that would be treated first. He has found patients
to have ulcers that they were not even aware of and also the beginnings of
other problems which could go ahead and be treated. I feel much better
myself knowing that I'll be having it done.

Hi. I just had my first consult today (Sat!!) and Dr. Duncan said that the
insurers are stopping endoscopies more and more unless there is a
pre-existing reason for you to have one. He does not do them prior to
surgery unless necessary.
