Question:
My bedroom is upstairs, will i be able to climb 11 or more steps after surger?

or will i have to temporarily move my 'sleeping quarters' on a main level?    — deb F. (posted on May 28, 2002)

My bedroom was also upstairs. I came down early in the morning very slowly when my husband was going to work, and was not allowed (by my DH) to go back upstairs until he came home from work. I would rest in a recliner during the day. I had a laproscopic, but it was still very slow going. You should check with your doctor. Good luck.

I live in a 3-stroy tenament and I am on the 3rd floor. However, my mom lives on the second floor and I stayed with her for the frist handful of days. I am 1 day shy of 5 weeks and I am just starting to feel less winded when I need to climb my stairs. The first day home from the hospital it took me about 10 minutes to make it up the stairs. Hope that helps!

Deb, I was told by my Dr, no sairs for at least two weeks. Every Dr is different, but I quickly found out why when I tried to climb my stairs 1 week post op. The hospital was very accomidating though, they sent me home with orders for a potty chair paid for by my insurance and the insurance would have paid for a hospital bed too for temporary use but I declined that to sleep in my recliner which was more comfortable anyway. Don't push too hard, this is major surgery. Allow yourself any time you can to recover. Good luck on your journey :)

My doctor said stairs are good exercise and had no problem with me being in an upstairs bedroom. I had no trouble cimbing the stairs, but I hurt my leg and didn't try to go down for several days til the swelling in my knee went down. After that I was up and down the stairs many times a day.

Climbing stairs should not be a problem. I made three trips up and down the first day home from the hospital.

I had lap RNY and there was no way I could go upstairs the first week. After that I could, but I'd plan to stay with a friend or family member for a few days.

Hi... I had surgery 4/2/02 and went home 4 days later to 18 steps, a landing and then 2 more and did just fine. I only did 1-2 trips a day and pretty much stayed upstairs the first 5 days or so. A tip for you. When going upstairs, walk up backwards, it takes the strain off the abdominal area. I was pretty comfortable in my bed too and used lots of pillows at first. Was about 3 wks till I could sleep on my side but then all was ok. Hope all goes well for you.
