Question:
What's the difference between Distal and Proximal and which does BTC in MI do?
Hi..I am getting confused. I hear people saying that they had a distal Open RNY or proximal RNY? I also hear people saying that with the distal, you lose more. What's the difference between these two? And does anybody know if BTC does the distl or proximal or both? I'm trying to get myself prepared for my first consultation at BTC. I've already called Loretta so many times..and she's great but I hate to be the annoying one. Can somebody please help me? Thanks! God Bless! :o) — Samar M. (posted on May 25, 2002)

THE BTC IN YPSI. DOES ONLY OPEN PROXIMAL. THEY DON'T DO LAP, AND THEY DON'T
DO DISTAL. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2 IS THE AMOUTN OF INTESTINES THAT
GET BYPASSED I HEARD. SEE WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE VERY OVERWEIGHT, THEY USALLY
DO THE DISTAL, AND THE PERSON LOSES WEIGHT FASTER, BUT THEY ALSO HAVE ALOT
OF MALABSORPTION ISSUES WITH IT. I HAVEN'T HAD MY SURGERY YET, BUT IT WILL
BE AT BTC AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

I am about to have an RNY done with Dr. Leverton at the BTC in Wylie Texas.
According to her, they cut 200cm down from the stomach. So.. technically
they do neither. The do something in between. She told me that they have
found 200cm seems to work out the best for long term results, or at least
that is what they have determined at BTC.
