Question:
Can a UTI delay surgery?
I'm one week pre-op and was just diagnosed with UTI. Will that cause a postponement of my surgery? — Pamela D. (posted on May 16, 2002)

Im not sure if anyone would delay a surgery because of a UTI, but if you
take your antibiotics, and drink lots of cranberry juice and water, it
might be all cleared up by the surgery day. Best of luck to you!!

After my POT's, I got an urgent call from my doc's office saying I had a
UTI. She phoned in some antibiotics for me, suggested I push cranberry and
water and they retested me the morning of surgery. I don't know if my
bacteria count was significantly lower or not, but they operated on me
anyway. Follow your doc's advice and don't sweat it. My POT's were only 3
days before surgery, so you should have time to deal with it before it sets
you back! Good Luck!

Well, if it's any consolation, they pump you full of tons of antibiotics
before surgery, just to lower your risk of infection. Any remnants of your
UTI will clear up quickly after surgery anyway ... just make sure you feel
pretty good going in so you can have all the energy you need for recovery.

I was also diagnosed with a UTI right before my surgery. I echo the answers
of other posters. Drink plenty of water, cranberry juice, water with lots
of lemon, take your antibiotics, no sodas and you should be okay! Good
luck!! Click on my name to read my profile about my UTI before my 12/3/01
surgery.
