Question:
When can we eat these foods?

I have been reading the libarary posts for 2 hours now and cannot seem to find what I'm looking for, so I'm giving up and asking. I am 10 days post op. I read that some people have eaten all kinds of things at this stage. I guess because I feel good on the outside it's hard to remember there's been so much done to the inside. Anyways, when can we start eating things like chili, chicken, and mostly salad. I am starving for a salad, but don't know whether to have one or not. I don't care about the other veggies on it, mainly just the lettuce and dressing... Thanks in advance... (open rny 5-2-02)    — candymom64 (posted on May 12, 2002)

According to our protocol-sald is at twelve weeks- I have to be honest and say I ate it at 6 weeks- one day it was fine - the next day I threw it up.... Red meat for us is 6-12 months- but Wendy's chili seems to be ok- the meat is very fine- and chicken is 6 weeks- the moister the better- you can do an internet search for gastric bypass diets and find all different information- usually it's best to follow whatever your doc recommends

First, congrats on your surgery! I am having mine in less than 3 weeks and just saw my dietician. Salad i was told to wait about 3 months for, the same goes for raw vegetables. She basically said to treat your stomach like it is a baby, they start off on liquids, then pureed, then soft, then normal foods, except we will do it faster. After 3-4 months, you should be able to eat many more things, almost normally, but ofcourse take it slowly, and everyone is different. I know many people have trouble with red meat. if you want, try Purdue, already cooked, ready to go meals, they come in a few flavors i believe, and are very soft and tender and are actually quite good for being microwaved in a minute!

Phyllis, I think you should check with your doctor on when you can eat salad and the other things you are craving. One thing I have noticed on this site is that doctors all have their own opinions on when we should eat what types of foods, I am sure they have those opinions for good reasons. I must say, I am a little jealous of the folks who can eat soft solids sooner than I will be able to (3 weeks), but I have heard of others who needed to stay on liquids longer than me. It really varies. Congratulations to you!! (I am 4 days post from lap-RNY and no cravings yet, Thank God, but I am sure they will come!!)

We had to wait 4 weeks to try salads and meats. But other doctors may recommend different. My doctor is one of those that make you eat something before you can be discharged. There are many that 'prescribe' liquids for 4-6 weeks. Its best to follow your docs orders of course. I know I was craving a salad like crazy too, and couldn't wait to have one. I was given permission though to try a teeny tiny bit of turkey at 2 weeks because it was Thanksgiving and did just fine. Not that I am saying its ok. It is just different doctors allowing different things. I believe that those that do liquids for *so long* are just being overly cautious, and quite frankly I believe that it is overkill. But I do believe also that holding off on the 'rough' foods for a little while are a good idea. It takes more work for the pouch to digest these foods. Welcome to the losing side!!

My Dr. had me wait until 4 weeks to eat any salad or meats. I pretty much was eating chili and refried beans at 2 weeks. Everybody's Dr. seems to be different.
