Question:
Do you count your protein drinks as part of your daily ounces of liquid?
I am 7 days post-op. Do you count your protein drinks as part of your daily ounces of liquid? I've noticed that many people consider them a meal or a snack. Second of all, can a sneeze hurt my new pouch? (I keep sneezing) Last of all, I had lap RNY and one of my six incisions is oozing a little with this yellowish stuff and there is a HUGE yellow bruise around it. None of my other incisions are like this...is it infected? I've left messages with my doctor's office and nobody is calling me back. Thank you for your input : ) — Kelly M. (posted on May 7, 2002)

Hi Kelly. I am post op a little over a month. I ,too had that yellow yucky
looking oozing. The dr told me it was a hemotoma( a pool of blood under the
skin) just draining. It was not an infection eventho it looked like one. I
wore a cover for nearly a month until it was done draining and healed from
the in-side out. Also, I would count the protein drink for protein intake
AND liquid intake. Good luck!!

Hello there - congratulations on coming through surgery & all. I would
say "yes" to the question regarding your liquid intake -
especially if your mixing your protein shake with water, I still do this.
Regarding the incision site - I had the same thing as well. My doctor did
not send me home with specific instructions on cleaning my wounds / drains
but my sister is a nurse and took care of them three times a day and I was
showering each day on top of that. To clean them, she would get sterile
pads and cut them up into little squares (about 4 for each wound). The
first one was always with some peroxide and she would use a new peroxide
pad for each wound (in case of infection, it wouldn't spread). After the
1st peroxide swipes, she'd go to distilled water (not tap) and cleanse them
all seperately about 2 or 3 times each. After that, she'd wrap it gently
in a clean gause pad and use paper tape to lessen the irritation to it. It
would 'ooze' at times but it was normal - I truly believe that she helped
me to heal as completely as I did. The drains hurt very little coming out
and I believe in my heart it was due to the care she gave me each day as I
was out of the hospital for about 2-weeks after. Hope this helps - write
if necessary. Good luck to you !!

I believe that Michelle 'vitalady' Curran says "YES", to count
the protein drinks toward you daily fluid intake. Maybe she will pop her
head in here and confirm that.

i am 5 days post op. my dr doesn't use stitches or staples, uses the steri
strips. at the top on both sides i have huge yellowish blisters. one popped
and oozed (sorry, gross), and i asked about it and was told it's just
blistering from the bandage being on tight. put a&d ointment or desitin
on it and that should clear it up. (open rny 5-2-02)

My doc says protein drinks are counted toward liquid intake. Rule he says
to follow....if it is liquid at room temp and contains no caffiene and very
little or better, no, sodium then you could count it. What you are having
draining is normal. I had them very bad and they have cleared up fine. 11
weeks post-op/60lbs gone forever!

My nutritionist says only zero calorie, zero caf beverages are to be
included.

I do count my protein drink, which is powder mixed with WATER not milk,
towards my fluid intake. My theory is if it's water and it doesn't have
any sugar or caffeine then count it!

Ahhh, Cheri, you give me credit for being much stronger in character than I
am! I do NOT count my water in my proteins toward my daily total. Darned
shame, as I'm currently getting at LEAST 48 oz in protein supps alone. I
tried it, but my body did not behave as if it really WAS hydrated. So, I
can "pretend" to count it, but my body won't. And since water
has been an issue for me, I dare not play mind games or I will cheat and
then not get the full benefit of my surgery. I do count any water based
drink that is not brown. I do not count decaf, and I have now FINALLY given
up diet sode, although it's killing me. So, I count Fruit 2 O, Crystal
Light, s/f Tang--stuff like that, but again, I'm not sure I'm fooling my
body! LOL! That's what comes of hanging around with urologists. Sigh.
They know what is & is not water. ANd you can't fool them, either. :-(

Hi Michelle, thank you for clarifying that for us. Sorry to have misquoted
you. I really do value your advice and try to go by what the 'ole pro'
says. That one I messed up! Time for me to start drinking more H2O!! :~)
