Question:
After 1 year, I continue to have unexplained health issues with vomitting, etc

My surgeon went out of practice in St. Louis, I have been in the hospital 12 times and have my 7th pik line in, I am once again on TPN, I am now below my goal weight. I would like to find an experienced surgeon who will consult and try to advise. I am scared.    — Trudie F. (posted on May 5, 2002)

Hey I dont want to scare you but you should demand they do an xray on you. You could have some malapsorption problems. Are you over eating?? Also look to see if it could possible be a blockage or a leak. That what xrays will hopefully find also they could scope you with a cameria into your intestines to do a good check. You need to smarter than these people. Especially if you got a surgeon who is over booked and does take the time for you. Also find out why your surgeon went out of practice get info. It could be fishy. sheri burke [email protected]

Hi Trudie, if your doctor went out of practice, you might want to go to the "Find a Doctor" section on this website and look for a new surgeon in your area. Hopefully you can get in to see someone soon. Even if you can't get a consult that fast, you might be able to get the doctor to call you on the phone (they often will). He/she might have some ideas on what to do to help you in the meantime. I'm sorry things are so bad for you, and I hope you get this worked out soon. God bless.

Trudie, I am so sorry for all of the problems you have had. From what I have read, your surgeon moved to the Chicago area and opened up a Ford auto dealership. Nevertheless, you need to find a surgeon to manage your health from a new perspective. This web site is such a great tool - go to "Peers", and look in your area and see what others are saying about THEIR surgeons, and use the "Find a Doc" feature, as well...THEN make sure that they get you an appointment ASAP. Godspeed.

Dear Trudie, I can truly relate and empathize with what you are experiencing, except for being under goal weight. I had constant nausea/ vomiting for the first 14 month after my original surgery. I consulted the original surgeon many times over to be brushed aside.. I was frustrated and posted to one of my online support groups about my nausea/ vomiting/ frustrations. I was invited to visit an online friend and get a second opinion with her surgeon.I am so thankful that I did. I had a very rare occurrence.. an atonic pouch.. which means an enlarged pouch that can no longer function properly to move food through the stoma. I stayed nauseated /vomiting daily. I became malnourished, had to go on TPN, got a MRSE infection from the picc line, etc.. I had a revision surgery in early Feb 2002 to correct the atonic pouch, plus two incisional hernias, hiatal hernia, remove some damaged intestines from having had peritonitis with my staple line disruption at 4 mo post op.. and to make me a more distal RNY. I feel wonderful now, and am not experiencing any further nausea/ vomiting unless I overeat, eat something that I know better .. ie Chinese.. I traveled almost 3000 miles to visit this online friend and to see her surgeon.. only to make this trip again so soon.. I saw the surgeon originally in Oct and returned in mid Jan.. Take care
